Not to mention that its again, yet again same "yay this will be great, believe in us:" hype with no context.
If people are disappointed, how about you SHOW actual primary gameplay mechanics, instead of talking about those all cool features it will (maybe) have.
- For example the main town actually FEELS like town, small streets reminding me of medieval towns, living houses that dwarf you in size, town layout(very unconventional for mmo, but very realistic for real town), horses in the stables, children running around the place and so on. Its the first time in a long long time when it actually FEELS like I am in town, instead of "that place made of squares where you get stuff from NPCs")
- Love how certain features are toyed with. For example, we all know PWE games contain autowalk. Well, in this game auto-walk is but a guideline. Sometimes it will just lead you to the place, but what to do there you will need to figure by yourself. And sometimes there will be no autowalk - through the clues on the text you will need to understand on what to do, with whom to talk and so on.
- Gotta love the quest unique-ness too. While some quests require you to kill stuff, a lot of the quests are VERY atmospheric(one of the starter quests, for example, require you to do multiple steps to summon a giant hydra/dragon and then you see it slowly rise out of the water to attack you) or thrilling(one of the quests required to jump down into seemingly bottomless abyss, only to be greeted down there by teh huge dragon 50x size of me). Other quests gave me different ways to complete them and my choices would affect the server progression itself.
- And the design. For a low/mid-end game, it sure looks awesome. And its all in the details(like different blinking effects for each race, how armors do not drastically change from let's say lvl5 to lvl10, but instead still follow similar design, how npcs and monsters are animated, etc)
- Old-School raiding. Reminds me of the old times when you and you party would go to this dark dungeon to face stuff and each and every member of your party had to useful and do its job or you are screwed.
- Monster AI, has a bit to do with the whole dungeon stuff. I was surprised at first on what your average boss can do(for example certain boss likes to change target from tank and go attack the healer first and another one once taken down to 20% hp starts doing kamikaze attacks on those party members with lowest hp...oh and another one who, if you have sufficient attack power to hurt him, increases his speed, runs away from you, summons minions to attack you close-range, while he himself stays outside of your range debuffing you). Party members will actually have to do their jobs to survive dungeons and get the loot.
- Guilds guilds guilds.... from customizable guild uniforms, skills, quests to city-simulator-like guild fortress system(for those still in the dark, the examples of guild fortress customization and building can be seen there: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YujRQpQc62s )...the best part? You can use that fortress to battle other guilds
Overall while FW is certainly not your "non targeting innovative new-age next gen mmorpg", it certainly takes the best things out of the genre and adds its own twist to them, while offering a lot of VERY exciting features.
Rifts are not just "instances" they are, literally factions that wage war against each other. You can ally yourself with one rift or another, you can log into the game in the village only to find that it became a battlefield between fire and water.
On other hand not all rifts that appear act violently. For example rift can spawn on top of village, changing the enviroinment, npcs, quest types and monsters around it
Fallout 3 has huge critical acclaim. But does it live up to the legacy of fallout games? nope. sure its decent game but its just a generic dystopian fps
Red Alert 3 was praised. Does it change the fact that the game missed everything that was great about red alert franchise and became a shallow cartoonified over the top version of red alert 2?
Don't let me start on Mass Effect II. the first part was unique and true bioware game with great characters and compelling storyline. Now comes the Mass effect II and i'm introduced into countless "MISHUN COMPLETO" screens, complete removal of item customization, complete removal of rpg parts. Then I get thrown into a ship together with a bunch of people, out of whom only one is likable(that one being Joker). So I am stuck there with those people(that are more like fetish fantasies. "alien warrior"? skinhead? "perfect girl"? silent alien killer in latex?), MISSING my previous crew, while constantly being reminded on just how awesome my current crew is and how I should not miss my previous awesome crew because they apparently decided to not care and act like jerks.
Hype? Glorified "omg me1 choices matter" turned into random npcs saying something or a letter coming into my ship -__- "awesome set of deep characters" turned into those stereotypes you build up relationship, get a hollywood-sex cutscene, do a side mission(most of them being "omg the character ____ is in trouble, make decisions for him!") and get a new kinky outfit for the character. -_- "awesome and intricate plot" turned into "so this magically resurrected guy is forced by this evil human org to hunt bugs...". Oh and reapers are apparantly now something you can take out with a pistol -_-
Now Dragon Age II is going same way (younger!~ edgier~ less rpgy~ Sexy Flemeth~ fixed-voiced-main-character-with-limited-customization-restricted-to-human-race~) while still following the same "omg this is so awesome you will liiiiike it" hype, bought-press-news and etc. I'm sure it will be followed bribed "omg its awesome" reviews by IGN(aka the guys who dared to give God-hand the score of 2/10 and downgraded lords of shadow to 7/10)
I miss the bioware that just created plain ass-kicking games, instead of doing all this evil-corporation bs and stomping out generic fps/action-y games instead of great awesome rpg games.
Sure Bioware, EA, etc is a dream job, but working on TOR can be compared on being a hostage - you are face, you are forced to smile wide and say stuff you do not believe in. The higher-ups need to hype stuff? Sure~ You are to say the official standing on just HOW AWESOME everything is? Sure~
Needless to say not many people want to be used as the chess figures.
Now with independent and separate developer, one might be able to do actual community managment. Especially considering Faxion: 1) Uses HeroEngine, so quality is guaranteed. 2) has unique ideas and concepts, unlike TOR.
P.S. I respect Bioware as they made many awesome games like KOTOR, Baldur's Gate, Dragon Age:Origins,Jade Empire, Mass Effect 1. However their hype machine is way too big. And their newest products(Dragon Age II, Mass effect II, ToR) just are not up to their usual standards, despite the usual fanfares. Bioware is slowly turning into what Blizzard and activision currently are and thats...sad.
HK47 was one of the most awesome KOTOR characters. to see him....destroyed in World of Republicraft is ....insulting.
Whats next? Raid Boss LVL 99 Darth Revan? Bioware continues to rape their franchises, they already cheapened down Mass Effect into Call of Mass Effect II fps and they are already god-of-warring Dragon Age.
I lost any respect I ever had fo rthis awesome company that created awesomeness like KOTOR, Baldur's Gate, Dragon Age: Origins. etc.

Aug 27th 2010 3:36PM (Massively)Either you already are too drugged by neverending stupid hyp eof TOR or you have no common sense o.O
TSW is original. I thas no levels or classes. It has an awesome idea. it is penned by Ragnar Tornquist.
TOR is a generic wow clone themepark with cartoon graphics and "storyline" that ruins the KOTOR saga.
