MMObility: What makes a good mobile game to me

Aug 31st 2011 12:42PM (Massively)
I TOTALLY agree with the Flexibility point. Nothing is more aggrivating than an MMO or mobile game in general that won't work on your phone tablet etc, but does work on your buddies. This is an overlooked and excellent point. Some devices are on the edge of worthless because none of the "good" apps work on them.

Even the beloved iOS still suffers from this, some games that work on the iPad really are just stretched out and don't do the platform justice.

Great read Beau!
Alyssa Bereznak is not worth defending.

I miss Voyages of Vanguard and the Ryzom videos. Beau I have been reading your stuff for a while and to be frank I'm bummed. You write so well and usually have a genuinely unique insight on many games. It seems like a waste that so much of your talent goes into covering the worst of the worst games, I mean, sure there are Mabinogis out there but mostly its f2p grinding garbage or poorly executed browser rubbish. I would rather see your take on say Age Of Conan, Asherons Call, or Istaria ( I know you have spoken on the games in the past but you get the idea). Games that are truly missed out on and could use your special brand of praise that makes them immediately more appealing. I think Massively would be well to do to allow you to explore old gems rather than cover the newest junk.

Atari: Cryptic Studios a 'discontinued operation' [Updated]

May 17th 2011 6:16PM (Massively)
Bummer for the employees. I hope not too many lose their jobs. I think Cryptic's biggest problem is the games. In my opinion the games aren't very good. I mean, Atari wouldn't have dropped Cryptic if Star Trek had a million subs. Cryptic releases sub standard products, it's as simple as that.

Thanks Beau, now I miss Voyages of Vanguard even more. Perhaps a "lost episode"?? :D

The Soapbox: The raid can wait; your kids can't

My father worked 6 days a week when I was a child at a very demanding job. He was stoic and quiet, if he were enjoying himself listening to music or working in the garage I would not have DARED interrupt him. He earned every minute of his time. I have ZERO resentment towards him and because of his strong work ethic and sense of family I ended up the same way. Our relationship is great because it comes from mutual respect. This "soft, everyone wins, never make your kid sad" stuff is really really pathetic.

Blizzard unveils Cataclysm system requirements

I played through several Burning Crusade 5-Mans and ran quests in Northrend for hours on a HP mini 311 last night. It has an atom CPU and an ION graphics chipset. I rarely dipped below 40fps. Even if I lose 10fps that's still 30 and very playable. That computer cost about $350. I'm far from worried.

The Tattered Notebook: Player-generated content please

I would love to see (although its a horse long beat dead) unique animations for ever race/class combo. It's a great game but an iksar should move differently than a gnome.
