One Shots is back! Long live One Shots!

Apr 1st 2012 9:59AM (Massively)
You know, while I read the short article I swear I can hear Shawns voice saying this exact text on Massively Speaking and I hear a short Rubi "yeah!"

You made me smile and that's the best thing an April fools joke can do ^^

Why I Play: Star Trek Online

@Deadalon

I can tell you from personal experience that it is easy to completely ignore these. They're a minor annoyance, that's it.

STO for me is way better than all the Cryptic haters tried to make me believe all the time. Thanks to F2P I can now experience this myself.

The Daily Grind: How many MMO betas are installed on your machine?

Mar 6th 2012 10:46AM (Massively)
I would not enter a beta that says 'no char wipe at the end of the beta'. If it is a beta, it shall be used for testing, not as a prelaunch release.
I tested Wakfu for several months, reporting errors and such, but currently there is no beta test game on my machine and I doubt this will change in the foreseeable future. I don't have the time anymore to take this job seriously.

Rise and Shiny: A bit of Wakfu, a smidge of Spiral Knights, and some Lime Odyssey

Beau, Wakfu is not made of magic poof, it is written in Java (watch the 'jre' directory in the game installation, it means "java runtime environment"). It uses JOGL (Java Open GL Binding) to perform the graphics rendering. In that sense it is different from Dofus, which uses Adobe AIR as its runtime.

@spiritljf For anyone who didn't: it is NOT Wakfu, it is Dofus.

Free for All: How I'm preparing for the release of Wakfu

@Joshua Przygocki
In that sense Dofus is f2p too and even more so, since you can earn the ogrines for a sub in game while not being subbed. See, that's the problem with limited terms like f2p, they do not always fit exactly.
In my definition you need a sub to see all of the world of wakfu, which makes it a sub-based game. But yes, you can log even when your sub has run out and at least interact with stuff in the limited beginners area.

Free for All: How I'm preparing for the release of Wakfu

Maybe it's stated differently on the starting web page for the US, but on the german and english pages it says very prominently "Subscribe to Wakfu" and "Why subscribe". From that I do not understand how this game can be rated as a f2p game. It isn't, just like dofus is not.

If you subscribe, you get, additionally to the subscription itself, subscription gifts. Pets, armor, Lottery jetons. Mind you, thats additional to the subscription, which is mandatory to play in the non-starter areas anyway. What they try to do here is to make it more insteresting for players to subscribe for a longer period, as not only the price per month drops but also the gifts are better. I cannot see how this can upset someone.

The Road to Mordor: Convenience, not advantage

Jan 22nd 2012 6:02AM (Massively)
Somebody will have to pay for the server rent, the wages of the employees etc. This obviously will be the players, who use the gaming service. The only thing in question is, how is the money raised?

I think the Turbine reasoning (no low level gear in auction house) is a fog grenade. There would have been other ways to overcome this, if it was a problem (it wasn't for me with quite a number of toons, so I am quite confused about this 'problem' anyways). I can also clearly see how they are breaking their word and by that they destroy their relation with their player base.

Having said that, I also do have a problem with that pay-to-win term. What exactly am I winning with level 20 gear? And to tell the truth, I still can find gear without paying real money - something that is impossible in a sub-based game. Strictly speaking, in a sub-based game all gear would be pay-to-win.
