I read Massively because it's more of a blog than a news site - gaming news is cluttered with generic marketese and crap.
I'm not hear for factual data, I'm here due to the emotional reaction the various writers have towards their given areas of focus - it goes well beyond generic news reporting and connection between writer and subject is a personal one, THIS IS THE APPEAL OF THE SITE.
If all future posts are going to be sanitized and over edited, my stay here will come to an abrupt end.
It is fat - almost to a fault as it can be intimidating to the uninitiated.
The sea of shit is pretty well segregated from the general populace - the vast majority of people playing EVE participate in PVE activities, in high security space.
There is a small amount of spillage, but for the most part your game is much less likely to be effected by a griefer in EVE than many other games.
There will always be those put off by its full loot PVP (Lord of the Flies) aspect, but nothing else comes remotely close to the width, breadth, and depth of EVE.
As I tell others when talking about it - it's much more of a hobby than just a game.
They all more or less have a purpose, however once you're able to fly every sub-cap in the game there are a few you wouldn't bother with. Likewise, when you're limited to a single races varient, having a sub-optimal ship available is better than nothing.
EVE needs a strong, cohesive, easy to navigate source of information for new and old players alike.
There are any number of mechanisms CCP could employ to engage new players and facilitate retention, I'm sure it's high on the list. If nothing else, getting their act together with the website has the potential to lessen the sharp edges of the learning curve.
