Grab some adventure packs. The best ones for low level xp and good times are:

Shan-To-Kor
Tangleroot Grove
Delera's Tomb

Those ones are quite popular so it is easy to find a group up, and give nice xp as well as items. They should take you up to level 7 or 8. Then you will want

Vault of Night
Gianthold
Necropolis part 2

Dont bother with the items, you can loot them or buy them by the time you are level 4 or 5, a few hours into the game.

There's no need to buy a race or class until you really want to work on different builds.
