Eh, considering I've played VG since early beta, I'd say I know what I'm talking about, lol.
It's subjective I suppose, but I sure wouldn't call a level-, class-, and holy trinity-based game (with a loot drop economy) a sandbox. If you want to be generous, call it a sandpark because of the open world and the diplomacy sphere, but that's stretching it imo.
A couple of us on staff here are huge Darkfall fans.
The problem as I see it is that AV makes it very hard to know wtf is going on with the game. Are they or are they not going to do character wipes when/if this new 2.0 thing gets here? And honestly, wtf is 2.0?
A new game? A giant expansion pack? Something else?
We've asked them multiple times to clarify these and other questions, and their complete silence on the matter makes it difficult to provide adequate Darkfall coverage (to say nothing of the fact that I don't really want to spend time playing it anymore until some very basic things are spelled out).
Love the world and the concept, though. Wish there were more games like it.
I do plan on coming back to AoC, I just can't tell you exactly when that will be because I'm going to be playing both TSW and GW2 at launch. Also when I do come back, I would love to roll on Crom and check out the EU community, but I could never get that workaround to do right when I tried it last year.
Probably something I was doing wrong, so I'll have to do some more research on that one.
It's interesting that you and a few other people brought up the elitism angle. I didn't even consider that when forming the question. To me it's more about simply playing with your friends and having more control over the experience, like a private Neverwinter Nights server in effect.
In my version of this tech, you could always go join the larger community whenever you wanted to, but you'd have the option to host private events for roleplay, PvP, or whatever else.
It cracks me up to see so much hostility towards the idea (not talking about you SC, just this thread in general).
Mainly because PS2 is massive in every sense of the word. BF is, what, 64 players on the PC version? PS2 is 600 or more (or whatever the number is, I forget). It's also not instanced/lobby-based, and that lends itself to a totally different feel and much more depth imo.
It's simple numbers really. So what if everyone in the room at Fanfest went along with what Mittani said? That was 1000 people, 2000? Out of a sub-base that numbers in the hundreds of thousands.
I get that people hate EVE and its community, that's perfectly ok. All I'm saying is that I question how much of that community they've actually interacted with.
Based on years of my own personal (and admittedly anecdotal experience), EVE's community is one of the more helpful and well-adjusted in all of online gaming.
Look at the comments in this very thread, lol. Most of the people getting pissy are the anti-EVE folks, while most of the fans are just chiming in with what they like about the game and moving on.
While the Mittani thing is unfortunate, and I have no love for him or his organization, people are mistaken if they think he speaks for or represents the EVE playerbase.
If you look at the latest CSM voting statistics, 50k people (give or take) voted. 10k of those voted for him, which means 40k people didn't want him as the chairman. He's very good at getting his face in the tabloids as it were, and so people who don't know any better assume that everyone in EVE is like him.
Well, they aren't, lol.
Like I said in the article, try the game and take part in the help chats if you want to speak with some authority on what EVE's community is like. Basing your opinion of it on one guy (or even that one guy's alliance, which makes up a fraction of the total playerbase) is erroneous.
Yeah, you're right about the legal protections in place in a real market. That's what I was alluding to in another comment in this thread where I said that there's no real downside to indiscriminate killing.
The freedom offered by the game overrides that concern for me personally (even though I too am a safe paycheck kind of guy), but it's too bad that CCP doesn't put in some real consequences. In that respect, I think EVE fails like every other FFA PvP sandbox.
Forgot to add that the reason I brought up DUST is because it excites me that CCP is expanding the world of EVE instead of just making another game. They could've just made a sci-fi shooter and probably made a few bucks, but by tying it in with EVE's economy (and hopefully at some point improving on the orbital strikes and moment-to-moment gameplay crossover), they're expanding the virtual world of New Eden as a whole.
And thereby making it more accessible to people who may be interested but don't want to commit to learning EVE.

VG is basically EverQuest 3.

So, not really irrelevant.
