Browsers have/are getting access to the graphics card and services like OnLive and Gaikai are streaming Assassin's Creed II to giant iPhones, so there's really no technical reason that a high quality game can't be pumped in.
Browser plugins are just apps that allow your browser to render data types other than html, so it might be helpful to think of your browser just initiating the game like the Steam client does.
WoW intro'd the TryWoW streaming client in 2008 I think - no reason at all that a high quality game can't be browser based in 2010. Unlike OnLive's streaming video setup, Battlestar Galactica Online will most likely follow the WoW model of asset download prioritization with local processing, so control lag shouldn't be as much of an issue.
A while back I heard the Syfy was working on an MMO/ TV show tie-in - not sure if this is it though. I always thought Caprica was tailor made for for MMO integration. Players would exist in V-World and New Cap City as Dead Walkers, only hearing about the real world of Caprica via live people that can log in or out.
Anyway, I love the IP so I hope they do a good job. Not crazy about the 'F2P', but how else would you charge for it? They need to overcome the stigma of the browser, so it's not like they can ask people $15/mo for it up front.
I think what you're seeing is the backlash created by the christian right trying to legislate morality. As you can see, a lot of people are sick of it. Sick of being judged, sick of being called a sinner and sick of being told they're going to hell. You can't get elected in the US without pretending to be a christian. The majority of the politics coming from the christian right these days are pro-war, anti-poor, anti-immigrant.
Even if that doesn't describe you, that's what's in the news and it's a platform of hate. Not what Jesus taught. Not at all.
If posting silly/rude jokes semi-anonymously on an internet gaming forum is what it takes for people to see they're not alone in their analysis of christianity then I'm all for it.
The NTE (New Testament Expansion) ruined the whole thing IMHO. You used to have to master four random professions to become a Jesus, now you can just start out as one.
""Launching this new game through Playboy.com will allow us to directly tap into our ideal gaming audience – avid, online men between the ages of 18-35."
What is an 'avid' online man? Did they mean erect?
"We look forward to engaging gamers in new and exciting ways through Playboy's network of high-traffic websites."
Coffee came out my nose. Are they saying there will be peripherals?
I'm not sure I agree. We all have the same amount of time in a day - 24 hours - so no one can be really 'time-rich' It's about how you choose to spend that time. If you decide to spend 4 hours a day in a MMO fine, if you decide you can't spend that amount of time in an MMO, that's fine too. There are games for both types of players - the problem here is that they switched LotRO mid-stream. They've taken all the time/effort that people have put into LotRO and made it worthless by allowing the 'money-rich' to catch up without putting in the time. It's kind of like spending 4 years in college to earn a degree and then finding out that they would be just selling degrees in the future.
Can't make everyone happy. If all of these games featured rippling men in armor alongside women in burkas, people would be crying that women don't get to express themselves. Sex is natural, boobs are natural, there were penises in Mortal Online. Get over it already.
After watching a bunch of Tera videos to try to see what was meant by 'jiggle physics' the only thing I'm offended by is those huge japanimation swords. I hate those, they're so stupid looking. Why isn't anyone complaining about the obvious giant phallic symbols you run around with in the game?
Yeah, I'm a tiny little effeminate elf-boy, but look at my giant sword!!
