The Daily Grind: Why don't you like PvP?

Jan 5th 2011 2:09PM (Massively)
The reason FPS works, is Level of player doesn't impact outcome of battle, or at least not enough to discourage someone whose loses a battle. The battle always has the possiblity of going either way, based on the action of the participants.

It seems in this regard, the MMORPG Genre is completely behind the times, and refuses to understand or change what is wrong. I find it hard to believe all of these brilliant game designers haven't figured out the issue, but game after game continues in the dogma created by the previous games of the genre, and they refuse to look at the fps for the solution.

Every encounter by two opposing players should have a chance for either combatant to win. Skill, circumstance, and luck can tip the balance slightly, and all will have a good time in the encounter, but if something makes the encounter completely lopsided, then it will not be fun.

Some of the most fun in pvp I have had is in tier 1 DAoC, or Warhammer Online. The levels during that time are insignificant, and each player can feel like the possibility of wining is there. Gear usually isn't much of a factor, and you only really have a few abilities, so you rely on team work to win the day.

The Daily Grind: Have you ever led a guild?

Dec 1st 2010 9:15AM (Massively)
It all started with Stategic-Alliance for Tribes, where I reacher second in command of 200+ clan.

After that played my first MMO and formed my first guild, "The Black Company" and yes I love those books.

Also created and ran Revilers in Wow on several servers, Warhammer Online and Conan.

In Eve created W.A.R. Industries and Strategic Alliance.

Currently laying low as it can be a burn out process, and will go full bore when Guild Wars 2 hits the stands.

The Daily Grind: What's your favorite starting zone?

Nov 17th 2010 4:55PM (Massively)
Tortage, the ship wrecked slave boat, getting to swing a broken boat oar and save a hottie who is half naked, 10 seconds into the game. All the voice over, the story and side stories of the town and outer areas.

Not only the best starter area but the best area. If every area could match those standards, I wouldn't be typing right now, I would be in game, forever.

I started the trial over the weekend and rolled up a Dwarf. I noticed I was also told to join NEW. Is this a multi faction clan, or is there one for each side?

The Soapbox: Respect the IP (or, why MMOs can't)

Nov 16th 2010 4:19PM (Massively)
I nice response and observation, well said.

I always like the original IP games better, but I don't blame the Devs, I blame my own prejudices and preconceived ideas on what the game should be, I dont blame them for not meeting it.

One of my most anticipated games of the future. I know it can be done, what they have to battle is the temptation to do what has already been done and prove will make money.

Every so often a courageous group of game developers makes a stand a says, "We are doing what hasn't been done, we don't know what will happen, but we think it will be good."

From a game developer point of view, it would be easier for me to provide the players with the tools to create a city, than it would be for me to hire programmers to build it for them. In fact, with the right implementation of tools and possibilities, the players could generate all the content, and the game wouldn't need expansions, or at least the could focus on bugs, balance, and new features, and not worry about, new zones, dungeons, cities, space stations or what ever.

I read an article that pointed out the players out number the npc's in almost every game, this needs to change, the players need to be way outnumbered. The world needs to be big, and expandable.

A posted above said (Pingles), "If you clear a town of undead what is the next guy gonna do? Or the next thousand people who happen upon that town?" They would thank the guy that did it, or they would run from him because he is a bad ass that cleared an entire town himself. Or they are going to defend it. the next wave of zombies is only just around the corner.

In fact if they were smart, they introduce a mechanic in the game that send more zombies at larger groups of people, the larger the group the more they are attacked.

Make sure the system has a true resource degradation system so nothing last forever.

Hell just like, Birk said, Minecraft already has the gameplay, they just need to expand it and make it look good.

The Daily Grind: What game did you spend the most time not playing?

Nov 5th 2010 8:42AM (Massively)
Eve Online has this one in spades.

If you consider, mission running, pvp, and mining game play, I still have logged into this game and spent hours doing non of those. It might have been moving cargo around from one station to another, or scouting, or wading through the markets in the region.

Eve absorbs alot of your time on tasks that are not shooting people in the face.

Even a patrol of 0.0 looking for a fight can suck up four hours, and you never even locked a guy.

No other game compares in the time sink area.

And yet I still like the game.

Perpetuum offering early access subscriptions

The Developers are Hungarian and the total Dev team is around 10 people, so before bashing it too much keep in mind what they have to work with.

It reminds me of early Eve, not years of fixes and expansions Eve, but how it was during beta. Sure, the game is still raw, and it will probably only appeal to a niche group just like Eve, but give it a chance at least.
