First Impressions: Final Fantasy XIV

Sep 23rd 2010 12:38AM (Massively)
Right, so. Considerable amount of people believe that an MMO review can be done on day 1. In context, even with a CE order ready to go *I will admit, being in Australia I had the game discs and patched before the servers went live. so I had played the game a fair bit before this article came out.

In the context of knowing that in NA no one had this head start then clearly it is unresonable to have a critical, objective review of any game, which is fair, done within a few days.

This all shows that controversy is more entertaining to many people and when they don;t get it from the writers they go elsewhere.

Thumbs up to Massively for being honest and open about thier own opinions and impressions. I'll be following the coverage of the game through the foreseeable future.

The Daily Grind: Are you buying Final Fantasy XIV?

Bought the CE and Day one down I spent around 11 hours online with around 60mins of a patchy connection where I got kicked a handful of times.

Server (Mysidia) is busy, got my leves done, pulled plenty of EXP on a few jobs and tradeskills and also covered a couple of hours in the Main Quest line.

Not sure how much you all need to be happy but I've had a greater variety of activities to do so far in this game then the opening of most other MMO's I have pleyed.

Usually you gotta work your way to major hubs and reach 'fighting' levels to unlock higher crafting. So far neither have been a problem.

SE haven't even opened up the major hub city for everyone yet so there is still tons to be revealed.

As for fatigue, in 6 days we'll know what kind of restriction that puts on player in real world play.

Handles fairly similarly to FFXI so if you hate that control scheme keep looking I'm afriad. FFXI was my first so it's no bother to me.

When I wake up I'll see what kind of damage all you NA players do to the so far smooth connection >

Jumped in when the servers went live (The advantage of GMT+10) and so far the game has been pretty smooth. Better frame rates, less lag and of course a Hardware mouse 100% supported.

Now there are more people the servers are hiccupping occassionally but thats to be expected. I imagine this will egt worse once NA users start to jump in as well.

Anyway I'm happy with the game and the content so far and I am sure some of you will watch the next few months to see if the game is for you.

As for 'incomplete' game there is no evidence of this yet and I doubt there will be for some weeks when people continue to progress.

Time will tell, but until then seems to be plenty of people online having fun ingame reguardless of the problems

Looks pretty cool. I might reactivate to try it if I get time with FFXIV

I am critisizing those who without provocation use name calling and belittling slurs on people who enjoy a game they don't.

I am treating them as they have treated the other side of thier own community. It would be hypocracy if I aimed by harsh tone at people who simply don;t like the game.

If I wasn't clear that I believe there are valid reasons to not like the game I apologise.

In most cases I let the obscene commentors do thier thing, but because I have followed FFXIV closely the sheer mass of derogatory comments which berate the players as much if not more then the game is, to me, unforgivable and I wanted to portray my sentiments which I know for a fact are shared amongst a great many in the community of people who refuse to read comments on this website.

My intention was to not reply to anything after my comment so as not to fuel an arguement by the merit of most of the replies.

@Syntax the downrated comments I was concerned with were comments of people simply saying they really enjoyed the game and can't wait. I have little love for people who single out WoW players as somewhat less then themselves. Likewise I do not want to give credence to writing off concerns as they are just 'Haters'

@Crazynanny perhaps my original post was inflammatry but I appreciate you see my point.

At the end of the day I appreciate what the guys and girls of Massively do here and I am let down by a community where people reduce thier work to a 'Game x sucks' thread

Hay look, another FFXIV thread that has been taken off topic by people either preaching all the reasons why the game is horrible or those defending it from those who wish to continue a tirade of boring negativity.

No game is perfect, no game is free of frustrating mechanics that turn people away. Thats why we don;t all play the same game for godssake.

For all the US talks about free speech you all downrate those who exercise that freedom and try to make it hard for others to read thier opinion.

The biggest failure of the FFXIV launch is the fact that this drivel gets peddaled out every time the fine writers at massively try to write a colomn and look for critically and thoughtfully written comments you all reward them with tripe. We know that there is a significant portion of people who don;t like that the game caters to both PC and Console, a lot of people do not like the combat flow, many hate the crafting and whatever else.

It's all relevant to the question 'Do you like the game'

It;s somewhat less relevant to posts about streaming the Launch day or Preparations for launch.

I don;t care how much money you 'saved' or how much of a train wreck you think the game will be or how idiotic the people who enjoy their playtime are. It's clear that the majority of people who critisize the game have taken it to the extreme of judging those who enjoy the game. You've all shown yourselves to be evengelical players determined to do your best to ridicule and bully people into sharing your opinions or writing them off for daring to have a mind of thier own or to have different paradigms of enjoyment.

Massively is too good for all your small minded barbarism and I salute the writers for putting up with trolling, thoughtless readers who feel the need to belittle anyone who dares to think differently.

Thanks Elliot for the info. I went and updated all my details ready for the launch thanks to this article and can't wait to jump in. I look forward to your roundup ^^

Good luck
