Anti-Aliased: Breaking into MMO gaming journalism pt. 2

Sep 17th 2010 10:33PM (Massively)
Good tips for using a blog to practice writing at the rate of speed you need to write here and elsewhere, and I think you give a good idea of the variety of things that would need to be covered.
I don't agree that a game specific blog should only be written by someone who knows every aspect of the game backwards and forwards. Many game specific blogs feature the chosen class of the writer, which gives readers both the feel of the game and if they are interested in that class, a bit more depth on how to play it.
The more ideas and points of view the better. With all of the games coming out, the more writers the better.

The Daily Grind: EQ2X or LOTRO?

Sep 14th 2010 11:00PM (Massively)
I love EQ2X. Great quests, love the world. Very sharp visually on my computer. If I don't think I like the limitations of the F2P version, the full game still exists and I can go with that.

I am so surprised by the changes in LOTRO. They should never have charged for quests and for existing areas like the Lonelands. I could see doing that with newly added areas, no problem, but hacking the existing game into sections like that, eek. And the whole game is hosed. You can't just play the "real" game anymore. Yow.

Don't forget LucasArts president Darrell Rodriguez and LucasArts developer Haden Blackman have also fallen by the SWTOR wayside recently.

38 Studios moves next door to Rhode Island for 75 million smackers

Interesting news.

If Rhode Island is interested in drawing in tech companies, a game company is great place to start. States offer tax incentives to get businesses in all the time.

Best of luck to these guys.

Choose my Adventure: The force is strong in this one

Re: the Beastmaster, I'm enjoying it on my character so I can recommend it that way.
I understand your point about just using your expertise to power your way along more traditionally since she is here likely for the short haul.

Choose my Adventure: The force is strong in this one

For a beginner, advancing through the Legacy Quest series is your only viable choice.
The Legacy Quest series arrived with the NGE and was meant to guide the new player through the "iconic" points of interest on Tatooine and Naboo.

The game was not quest driven to begin with, and although spotty quests have been added here and there at higher levels (Including Kashyyyk and Mustafar)the game was never fully changed over to be a game with quest areas that you could work through as is common in other games. By design, they wanted everyone to do this series of quests. I have no idea why they never took advantage of the worlds they created to fill in stories and quests and complete the transition they started.

The quests involve a huge amount of traveling, and much back and forth to the same locations/caves.

If that sort of repetition makes you buggy, you can do 10 mission terminal missions per day for extra xp (though at lower levels it isn't much). I recommend timewise you take npc missions rather than lairs. They're just quicker and don't involve respawns.

According to the official web site, "You get 9% of the XP gained from killing a ship as ground Combat Experience." So there is a bit of extra xp and a fun part of the game that many people love and respect.

Buying player crafted vehicles and a home and furnishings and clothing is always fun.

If you have a hunter/gatherer buried deep inside, gather hide from any animals you kill to sell. (If you use autoloot you have about 6 seconds to use the radial menu to gather it)
Use the Forage command to gather enzymes and treasure maps (sell anything else to the Junk Dealer).

At level 10 take some Beast Master Points so you can work towards gathering DNA for beasts.
Good luck!

Choose my Adventure: In a galaxy far, far away

My Suggestions:

Female
Commando or Spy Great Explosions
Because you can have 2 toons per server add a Structures Trader (Most fun because you can make furniture you can use really soon!)
If I were going to start all over in the game I would choose Bria.

--Don't forget to do all the quests on Tansarri Station you can take, including the Space missions. I would try to get to level 10 before leaving if you can stand it. This starts you out on the ground in much better shape for beginning the Legacy series.
You can also do quests for the Mayor of Mos Eisely for xp.
Also do: 10 Mission Terminal Quests per day for extra xp
Consider buying Player written Chronicle Quests which will have you getting xp for killing the mobs that you're going to encounter anywho.

Best of luck.

The Daily Grind: What's your briefest MMO dalliance?

Jun 24th 2010 8:51AM (Massively)
Dungeons & Dragons Online. I wanted to like it and gave it a couple of tries (before it became ftp) but that hokey voiceover, the sardine can feeling to the world, the terrible character models.

I only made it out of the starter area once and was in a group with a giggly high school teacher complaining about her students and flirting with the two guys in the group who sounded not far from that age. Poke my eyes out and get me outta there...agh.

I would just describe the game as cheesy. Bleh.
