If that ever happened, I would be back in an instant. As it stands, I'm tempted, but not sold. I remember hating the combat. Being completely unable to target adequately destroyed it for me. Unless I was missing something.
I'd like to see a DDO based on Krynn and its inhabitants. As for rules, I think that DDO has the 3.5 rules down very well, and I don't see a lot of reason to change. If I had to make one change in the format, it would be controls. I like the interaction of controlling every swing Diablo-style, but as longer play-sessions wear on, my finger gets tired and I don't care nearly as much about killing those monsters.
How long will it take to level to 85? Or more precisely, will the XP curve be roughly equivalent to how long it took from 60-70 and 70-80 or will it be cut in half?
That was my first thought upon reading it. The best XP boosts are those that come in short bursts, not long, because it helps players moderate their playtime rather than becoming unhealthy and glued to their computers. For NC Soft to put in the polar opposite of WoW's Rested XP system, they are catering to a singular demographic, limiting their already limited subscribers, and playing right into the hands of the Aion critics that say the game is already too timesink-heavy, even for an MMO.
I'm going to try and get some ICC pugs going in WoW to actually see the content before Cataclysm comes out, and I'm going to also get hard into DDO with Syp and a few others. I just started the game this week, and I'm very happy with it. It's almost enough to make me not miss playing D&D in my dorm basement with my buddies in college. Almost.
I've tried some free shards before, and even the best of them couldn't keep my attention the way OSI shards did. There was always something lacking, even if the shard had more people on it at any given time than Lake Superior ever did in Felucca. I wish I had some justification for it, but the free servers I tried never gave me the sense of accomplishment with characters and playing that live servers did.
That's the feeling I still look for in MMOs, too, Scopique. I, too, have gone back to the game a few times and each time, I found the changes that had been made took even more of what I loved from the game. I haven't been able to bring myself to try Stygian Abyss or Kingdom Reborn.
I have a strong hope that The Old Republic will help make a "world" for players to live in given their focus on narrative.
@Succulent: You do realize that WoWwiki is a wiki, right? As in, anyone can edit it and put whatever information they /think/ is true on there? I could go right now and edit it to say that Ghostcrawler promised us a Santa's Sleigh mount and that it was going to be in the Blizzard Store at Christmas for ninety bajillion dollars, and it would publish on WoWwiki for the world to see.
Take what's there with a grain of salt. If you can't find a blue post stating it or a dev chat or a BlizzCon panel, then most likely, it ain't happening. It's just some schmuck like you and me posting what they infer or hope to happen, based on the loosest definition of research.
