The things I miss from SWG are already gone and have been gone for years. I miss the old CH profession the most and all that came with it.
I miss the skill-based progression and how customizable everything was such that you could make precisely the toon you wanted vs the class-based garbage that followed the NGE.
In the early early days, before all the nerfs and changes, my wookie creature handler would head out into the deep wilderness, hunting babies to tame. Covering herself with musk, sneaking every so slowly to not alert the parents, finding the rarest of pets for my collection, back when it took work, skill, and patience.
That, and my holocron grind, before it went "commercial".
OMG, and doing Gypsy Pub Crawls with Javier!!!! I take all of the above back, my favorite times were with Javier and the Gypsies, choreographing Pub Crawls, putting them together and performing them.
Aso ne of those old players, I'm going to say "horse hockey". The good old days SUCKED, and I *LOVE* the new games. That said, let me comment on your assessments...
EverQuest II is better than Age of Conan - Absolutely. AoC was crap when it came out and it's still crap. It's missing so much and has never felt "complete" to me.
Dark Age of Camelot is better than Aion. - Yes and No. Aion is a gorgeous game, and I love a lot of the playability, but DAoC captured RvR better than any game before or since, and since Aion defines itself as an RvR game, I'm going to have to agree...but Aion is *SO* pretty! :D
Star Wars Galaxies is better than Star Trek Online. - Again, yes and no. Let me qualify...ORIGINAL SWG was *FAR* better than STO is right now. STO was released 2 years too early and isn't finished. A year after release it's a lot better than it was, but it's still not ready. Original SWG was my favorite game of all time and if SoE had not violated it horribly, I'd still be playing it. Current SWG is garbage.
City of Heroes is better than DC Universe Online. - Without question. DCU is plastic and has nothing on CoH. Granted, CoH's graphics are dated and could use a huge facelift, which NCSoft would never do because that costs money, but DCU is boring and linear and simply not enjoyable to me at all.
Mabinogi is better than Vindictus - No clue, never played Mab and didn't like Vindictus at all.
Graphics are a dime a dozen, so any game that comes out today MUST have great graphics, that's simply a given. So it comes down to content and commitment to the community. Many of the older games had a lot more commitment to their communities than these dime-a-dozen games that come out every month these days.
But no, the good old days were not good. They were filled with crashing servers, horrible drivers, and idiot devs :P
I tend to dislike voice chat because so few people understand the simplest of courtesies, which becomes even more annoying during complex encounters. Things like: - There is no need to fellate the mic, I don't need to hear you breathing, which leads to... - Push to talk. Seriously. - Never play music. There is no song you can blare over Vent that everyone on the channel will enjoy. - Use the loop back function and listen to your own volume. It's not my job to tell you how to use your voice software, and assuming your settings are perfect will get you muted, often. - Shut up. Not all silence needs to be filled. It's not a dynamic conversation where we can hear when everyone is talking, and even when we're face-to-face talking over someone is rude, in VOIP it's infinitely worse. - Please don't push-to-talk to laugh. Laughter is supposed to be spontaneous. If you say something funny, I pause for 20 sec for folks to stop talking, then push to talk and "ha ha" in the mic, it's fake and annoying. If you laugh, then laugh, no need to share it. - Please don't use internet lingo in VOIP. You don't *SAY* "LOL" or "OMG", and if you do you'll get muted.
It's probably because I'm old but my tolerance for idiots on the 'net has plummeted since the introduction of VOIP in games. I've been in raids where the only person I don't have muted is the raid leader, because the side-chatter is so annoying.
I have a toon named Leo IX, he's a mutant, created in the Crey Labs. Unfortunately, with no leonine parts, he looks like Lion-O from the Thundercats, which makes me sad.
I *LOVE* the new lion parts and the beast run, they will totally complete his costume.
So Joe, if I played the AH and had millions across lots of toons, I could buy everything that ever drops and people get cash that they couldn't use to buy equal items because they're no-drop? So the MT never gets better armor, the rogues never get better daggers and my half-assed secondary healer who just happens to be a whiz at the AH gets drops they can only barely use?
The biggest problem with anything but Loot Council is that, with 5 min of thought, an easy way to "game" the system can come up with.
Things I'd like to see: 1. Base upgrades. I've 40m prestige and nothing to spend it on. I'd like to do serious crafting for my SG but the storage limits are ridiculous for a base the size of a city block. I want a Cim portal, a danger room, Praet textures, etc. There are a TON of improvements that can be done in this space.
2. Costume pieces. I want the Carnie set. I'd like more belt options. Male headbands with hair. I know it sounds trivial to some, but there is a large segment of CoH's population that's here almost solely for the costumes.
3. MM customization. I want a single MM class, I choose my primary and I BUILD my pets, similar to the AE builder. I pick the look (or design a costume), and pick the power sets for them, so if I want a group of soldiers that use dark instead of guns, I can have it. Tremendous potential in this AT, would like to see it expanded upon.
4. Leech from the other hero MMO's. Give us DCUO's wall walking, give us ChO's parkour/acrobatics. The DP AT was directly from ChO's having it, the moves are even similar, keep it up. I'm with the other posters, CoH will see dips when other hero mmo's come out, but folks will always come back.
5. I agree, more EAT's. Expand the Incarnate system to be more than enhancers (pretty sure that's the plan anyway).
Plenty of room for improvement in this old dog yet :)
LOL, Fed and Klingons at "work". I meant at war. Sorry, this was posted pre-tea this morning.
Another thing, given how many episodes occur 100% inside the ship, my ship should be an adventure zone all on it's own. Some alien sneaks on board and we have to deal with him, good or bad. Think of it as a mini-game or small single player game. Let us go on missions to upgrade our ship interiors. We find things on planets that let us add to it, and then find out it had a sentient lifeform in it that we didn't know and it begins assimilating our ship.
200+ movies/episodes, plus 100's more books, a HUGE amount of content. Use some imagination.
