The Soapbox: What you loved is still there

Mar 16th 2012 6:02PM (Massively)
@hereafter modern music only seems stagnant if you're not paying attention, honestly. There's hundreds of bands out there experimenting and rocking out to new and exciting stuff every day, and the "underground" is pretty thriving. Underground really does need to be in quotes, since it's not like the 80's or 90's where you had to seek and find it. It takes two seconds of research to find bands that aren't on the radio regularly, and it is it's own giant culture, not just a small little movement. They're on major labels, they have nationwide tours, they sell out arena's, but if you don't look you won't find it.

Hyperspace Beacon: Cheating vs. poor design

I don't think people really get what an exploit is still.

If you cut through a parking lot to get through a red light, a cop can pull you over. Just because you "can" and the parking lot was there doesn't give you the right to use it, and it's not going to make anyone say "oh! our bad, we shouldn't have designed the parking lot that way!"

It seems like everyone's excuse is that if there is a way, then players will find it and use it. I'm not really sure why "we're bad people" is somehow an acceptable go to defense.

@Ayenn

It might be just me, but being called weak minded and insulted for liking a videogame seems like a pretty reasonable thing to be offended by and attack back about.

Yes, I find it odd as well that a level 60 skill isn't locked away in a level 80 questing area. What were they thinking?

PAX 2010: Your questions answered by SWTOR's Blaine Christine

"You remember that part where Han Solo and Chewbacca are in the Millennium Falcon? Han's like, 'Hey, Chewie, let's go into space, and let's just dick around. Let's go off in that direction and see if there is anything interesting'? Remember how they went off and there was this asteroid, and they mined the asteroid? Yeah, we couldn't find that either. Two things happened when you went to space. One: You took off to space when you wanted to go somewhere. You took off into hyperspace -- BAM! -- and got there. Two: You wanted to go to a battle or you were trying to go somewhere and someone stopped you. Uh oh! Giant exciting combat! ... That is why we did space combat the way we did."

Yeah and remember that time Han and Chewie were flying around in space and saw something they wanted to avoid and Han was like "Chewie turn us around!" and Chewie was like "Nah dude, can't. This baby flies on rails."

Me neither.

Honestly the on-rails thing didn't bother me that much, but that comment makes my stomach churn a bit.

The Daily Grind: How do you like your character customization?

Sep 11th 2010 10:13AM (Massively)
If they could pull it off, something like the Spiderman movie costume progression would be okay. Start off with sweaters and stuff you made yourself with a ski mask, and eventually move on to full on spandex suits. But there would need to be a way to create an initial "theme" and have that theme transition in a meaningful way.

It's asking too much, and it'll probably be just gear, but that'd be great honestly. Origin style stories are the reason that a lot of the new superhero stuff coming out today are good. CO and CoX just plop you in as an already full blown hero.

The Daily Grind: Are open betas necessary?

@adamaant theres unfortunately typically a difference in quality when it comes to single-player vs. mmo's. especially at release. Most likely due to subscription models, the quicker the game comes out, the sooner they can start regularly making money, so more often than not a game comes out in the MMO market that would never be considered even close to done in the single-player market.

Do single-player games still have bugs and seem rushed occasionally? Sure, but when's the last time you picked one up from the store and found it entirely unplayable? Typically never. MMO's need trials now because the developers of those titles have broken the trust of most consumers by consistently releasing unfinished and mediocre games.

PAX 2010: CCP unveils EVE Online's latest expansion

You don't passively level, you passively train. It sounds like a asinine difference but it does matter. There aren't any levels, just more skills. You're never level 5 going up against a level 80. You're a guy fitted in a frigate chipping away at a guy in a battlecruiser who can't target lock you, and if you know what you're doing, you can win.

You never have to "catch up to veterans" since they can only fly one ship at a time, which can only fit certain modules at a time. All the skills do is give you more options.

Thats what Dirame meant by understanding the game.

Cryptic and Atari announce Neverwinter

That's a shame, haha.

It's weird, my three favorite MMO's are pretty much the most hated in the industry. CO, AoC, and SWG.

Maybe I'm just too casual.
