Star Trek Online's State of the Game: The first patch

Jan 28th 2010 3:33PM (Massively)
I'm looking forward to this - beta was fun this should just add to it. Of course, I'm not an uber speed leveling l33t fanboy needing to dominate with uncapped skill points, so take my opinion how you will.

Hopefully STO fans won't get trampled by the CO whiners here, but it will probably happen. I don't think any of these people saying "CO sucks so I won't play STO" have a clue how corporations work... for example Chevy put out the Aveo as well as the Corvette - two totally different products designed and built by two totally different teams. Furthermore, if you think CBS is going to let the Star Trek IP receive the same treatment as some second rate pen and paper superhero game from the 80s you need to pull your head out of your hind end. It won't happen. If anything evil is happening, Cryptic is probably using the money from the paid CO expansion to beef up STO.

I got to 9 without paying attention to leveling at all. Just had fun doing missions and shooting Klingons. No grind what so ever.

I agree with your statement on adding more social aspects. I think LotRO does a decent job of this with their instruments, fishing, etc. In my opinion a game is more immersive if there are things to do beyond questing and fighting.

I tried the beta through Steam - it is a FPS with an overblown lobby so if you're looking for an MMO experience, look elsewhere. It's like if Valve added different colored armor and a half-assed crafting system to TF2

Samsung, JVC pick RealD tech for their new 3D LCD televisions

$100 - that's cool. I'll still be holding off on buying a new one until I see how it all shakes out. Personally I can't wait for the self-organizing nano-paint TV in a can!

Not sure about the 120hz mark, but I own a pair of LCD shutter glasses purchased through NVidia years ago that'll work with my old 21" CRT monster and CRT TVs that will not function with any LCD panel I own because of refresh rate. NVidia's newer offering is sold with a 120hz monitor - sold as a kit because 120hz monitors are still relatively rare.

Sorry though, no personal insult to trade with yours.

I think that the recession brought HDTVs down to a reasonable pricepoint and this "3D assault" is really just the manufacturers' attempt to put another little sticker on the front of the TV in order to justify adding another $1000 back into the price.

The giant elephant in the room though is that this is really just about refresh rate and the fact that the HDTVs (and LCD monitors) haven't caught up with CRT TVs and monitors yet. My old Trinitrons will do shutter glasses or passive (polarized and red/blue) 3D just fine.

The net effect this has had on my situation is when I saw a 47" LCD for less than $700 this year the only reason I didn't pull the trigger on HDTV and a PS3 is because of articles like this - I'm not going to get stuck with old tech.

Additionally, what about the content? Are we expected to believe that broadcasters and movie houses are going to bring us content in 3D when my Time Warner Cable still only offers 8 channels in HD?

Give me a break. This is hype pure and simple.

I can't stand all the sepia toned graphics in the game.
