I haven't reached the later stages of lotro yet... even though I've been playing about a year (yes, I'm slow), but I agree with the comment on skirmishes. They are a lot of fun. Epic storyline is a lot of fun too.
I'm still a subscriber and I didn't really expect the game to go f2p but Turbine implemented it very well. A person avoiding the game because it's free to play now is really missing out.
I think people are just concerned because it is very easy for a developer to go for a cheap laugh instead of really making something that fits within the legacy of the books. I think Lotro more than any other MMO, attracts players who wish to immerse themselves in a game world that is true to the vision of its creator.
For myself personally, the pop culture references in WoW totally turned me off from the game. If they added such things to lotro it would be my hope Tolkien would rise from the grave and lay a smackdown on the person who did it.
"In this controversial opinion piece, I dig into the controversy surrounding CCP's recent communication with EVE Online's playerbase and the reactions forum-going players have had."
I generally enjoy the EVE Evolved articles and this article is no exception, but is it really up to the writer of the article to decide whether his work is controversial. :P
"SOE know that if they changed the business model of EQ2 in any way at all towards F2P they would lose 95% of their customers overnight. They would be unlikely to enjoy a net gain from any such change, whereas Turbine will only lose a comparative handful of existing customers with LoTRO and will undoubtedly enjoy a large net gain."
The logic where it wouldn't work for Sony vs. where it does work for Turbine escapes me.
Oh yes, another thing. I would put aside my dislike of "holiday" themed in-game events for anything that involved hunting ewoks. No matter what the game.
Generally, I think events based on real world holidays are overdone. Usually you end up with a bunch of junk clogging up inventories (which for some reason every game maker cheaps out on) The events usually break from the storyline of the game or are only marginally representative of the game world and at worst a pop-culture nightmare that breaks any sense of immersion a player might have in the game.
Game makers should limit these "holiday" events and focus more on real content or else build actual events that pertain to the mythos of the game, but I guess they just do it because everyone wants some "shiny" that will usually end up sitting in a players bank an hour after they get it.
