Star Wars: The Old Republic answers questions on 1.2 and priorities

Mar 18th 2012 5:42PM (Massively)
@Tom in VA

I agree with Tom, I love the game and the new things it has brought to the scene. But there are these little things that make you sit up and scratch your head in wonder. How did they ever miss some of these things? They are so obvious.

They are not game breakers for me, I love the SW IP and will play regardless, but if your not a SW nut like I am I can understand some poeples lack of tolerance for the things that simply should have been in game before release or should have been fixed. That said i am glad they are fixing them now.

I gotta laugh nervously when the devs say things like, "oh you want more character slots? Gee we didnt forsee that, we'll make a note of that."

SERIOUSLY? Just how out of touch are developers who dont forsee this -and other- needs? Oh you actually wan't to play races other than neo-humans? Oh after all the fuss about pre-release guild registrations and implamentation, you actually want a guild bank? Really? No Shit Sherlock! Yes a customizable UI is a standard feature we expect at launch.

So I kind of wonder what the devs are thinking, who they are talking too, and how they set thier priorities when they are 'suprised' by what are to the rest of us 'no-brainers'. It is however somwhat of a testiment to Bioware though that despite these annoying little things, the game is still holding it's own and doing well. I am not alarmed by the addition of endgame content, 1.2 is adding a lot of varied content for everyone. I just hope they re-evaluate thier priorities after 1.2 and start focusing on expanding non-raid content.

Epic in scope: SWTOR's James Ohlen explains plans for the future

Having epic fun in an epic game that just keeps getting more, well... ...Epic. lol.

Let the haters rave and foam at the mouth all they want, for me, this is the most fun I have had in a MMO since my first MMO and thats saying somthing. I never thought i would recapture that feeling and SWTOR has done it for me. Keep up the good work!

The Daily Grind: How much grouping should be required in a game?

Mar 12th 2012 6:23PM (Massively)
Provide a possative, non exclusive incentive to group and people will group, add an unintrusive, seemless method of grouping and people will more likley accept grouping such as in rift and sto. Force people to group and a percentage of players will by default refuse to group on principle because no one likes to be forced and told they must group.

There is an issue that often gets overlooked in this whole solo vs. group debate, and thats the role of 'small groups' and 'duo-players' or players who team with one other player often but dont like bigger groups. Many MMO's seem to stipulate and arbitary party size, so even if you group with your best friend or partner, you may still miss out on content unless you choose to join bigger groups.

The same goes with guilds, small little guilds made up of a handfull of friends who like to play together but have no desire to grow or recruit often also get left out because they dont qualify for content designed for big raiding groups.

Personally, I think gamers choose to play how they want to play, devs need to accept they cant force players to play how they believe they want the players to play. Thats a formula for failure. Gamers are by nature fickle creatures who will do what they want, if your game restricts them too much they will eventually go elsewhere and take thier hard earned cash with them.

Leaderboard: Playing same gender vs. opposite gender

It's all about the eye candy, if i am going to follow this character round for X amount of hours staring at thier butt i want to be sure I enjoy the view. Thier is nothing unusual about that.

SWTOR's lead PvP designer answers community questions

Mar 1st 2012 5:05PM (Massively)
The Official Asia Pacific (Oceanic) launch has been a bit of a mixed bag. As an Australian player who has been playing since the last big beta I can say with some confidence that most Au/Nz players who wanted to play did not wait for the late delayed release date. We all ordered the game online and have been playing since early start along with everyone else.

Though it’s old news now how BW delayed the official release here, it came as a huge shock to our community. No other MMO had done this to Oceanics before, we have always been able to buy the game, subscribe and play alongside our American or European friends. We had become somewhat accustomed to this being the standard treatment to expect from any new MMO. Likewise we as a community also know we have to lobby hard pre and post launch to try and get US Based servers labelled as Oceanic so our community can play together. Something which sadly doesn’t always happen.

So on one Hand, BW shocked us by delaying our launch date, especially when several non-english speaking nations were being included in the normal launch date and we were not. It certainly generated a huge amount of ill feeling towards BW and SWTOR.

Then a few weeks ago, BW announce they are not only going to designate Asia Pacific servers, but they are going to (and have since done so) make actual physical servers here in Australia. This is unprecedented among MMO’s. It certainly went a long way towards healing the rift created by not including us in the initial launch window for the game.

But now BW tell us they are unable to do character transfers till late April, which has enraged no few players who are worried about losing their chosen character names, guild names and legacy names. A recent post in response to these concerns states that BW just isn’t ready to do the transfers yet and are working hard on it.

All in all it seems Bioware really needs to learn a lesson about communicating with their players and fans. If they had come forward in the beginning and said, Asia Pacific release date will be delayed because we are giving you actual physical servers and character transfers will follow a month or two after that, then this very bumpy up and down ride that we are having would have gone a lot smoother.

The game is great, we’re enjoying it, but this whole give with one hand and take with the other side show is really not helping the community and doing very little for player confidence.

The Perfect Ten: Clever ideas

Good List, i like it, one feature i applauded in Rift was the addition to your active quest list (on screen) that had an icon for any special quest items you had to use to complete the quest. This was great as it saved you from having to find the item and equip it either before or during the quest which can be a pain at times.

New Star Wars: The Old Republic video celebrates a successful launch

Feb 21st 2012 8:03PM (Massively)
Bioware can be comfortable in celibrating a sucessfull launch, the game has launched and it is clearly a success. I look forward to seeing what they say at the six month mark, but wont deny them the right to celibrate thier launch, they have very much earned the right to do so. I have never seen a smoother MMO launch and there have been some shockers!

Online gaming linked with marital dissatisfaction

Feb 16th 2012 3:45PM (Massively)
My Spouce and I play together, we started with never winter nights, moved on to guild wars, CoX, vanguard, AoC and Rift. Finally we have settled into SWTOR. I can honestly say the couple that plays together, communicates, plans, stratagises, problem solves, crafts and laughs together, stays together.

Go figure hey... gaming good for a relationship
