Anarchy Online beats the heat with nano spreadsheets

Jul 26th 2010 2:19PM (Massively)
Wasn't Funcom working on a engine update for AO that was supposed to come out last summer? I saw screenshots of it, it looked like it really improved the look of the game, then it vanished into nothingness, never to be seen again.

Breakfast Topic: Holiday boss in the dungeon finder is the best thing ever

I do enjoy it, the rewards are fantastic, and now I can get into the spirit of the season. Can't wait until Halloween!

Final Fantasy XIV launches benchmark application

Really? Because I got a older system by PC standards (Radeon 4550, Phenom Quad-Core 2.2ghz, 6 gigs, running Win 7 64-bit), and it ran decently. I think as long as you bought/built your computer in the last three years, you should be fine.

Or, you can just skip the computer nonsense all together and play on your PS3. A MMO that gives you options, don't you just love it?

Derek Smart: big changes in store for Alganon

Mar 12th 2010 11:24AM (Massively)
As much laughter and sheer amazement Smart has provided me in the past, he seems to want to make Alganon a decent MMO rather than just another WoW clone, and for that, I applaud his work. Whether or not things will work out the way he hopes, that's a different story, but he seems to have a grasp on the situation.

David Allen leaves Alganon

Perhaps Derek Smark, PhD, will make one of the raid bosses a very angry Coke machine...

The Daily Grind: How do you feel about 2010's MMOs?

Mar 6th 2010 10:54AM (Massively)
Star Trek Online- Bought for $3.25, not bad at that price, but I severely doubt I'm going to resubscribe after my 30 days are up.

Allods Online- I just couldn't get into it during the CBT, and with the recent mistakes they made with the cash shop, I'm not going to start up again any time soon.

APB- If they deliver on the promise of a huge open world with cops vs. robbers, I'm down to play it. Plus, the customization options look incredible.

Final Fantasy XIV- As a big fan of the world and atmosphere (if not necessarily the gameplay) of FFXI, I'm hyped up for XIV. The graphics are very nice, especially for an MMO, the job system sounds like a fresh change of pace, and the focus on more solo play really give me hope that SE knows what they're doing.

DC Universe Online- Real-time action gameplay with my own custom superhero fighting Sinestro with Hal Jordan and Jon Stewart? YES PLEASE. My problem is that I keep hearing a rumor about the game being heavily instanced ala Champions, so we won't have huge numbers of superheros or villains teaming up. Still, with all the time they're taking with the game, I'm sure that it won't be the superdud Champions was.

Lego Universe- I'll have to see some more gameplay involving Lego building, but if the game is even a tenth as exciting as the first trailer was, I'm down to build my Lego Rocket Tank Car and beat up on some bad guys.

That's it from me. FFXIV and DCUO are my most wanted, as well as The Secret World, but I doubt that's coming out this year. Probably around May 2011, if I had to guess.

Civ V trailer lacks mind-blowing turn-based action sequences

Civ V, I must have you NOW. I'm ready to kiss away weeks of my life.

Champions Online expansion is now free

Feb 9th 2010 11:21PM (Massively)
Well, it's a start.

It would've been smarter just to make the expansion free in the first place, but hey, progress is progress.

Final Fantasy XIII producers: Traditional RPG towns are tough to do in HD

Feb 8th 2010 9:02AM (Joystiq Playstation)
What I don't understand is that FFXIII has been in development since at least late 2005, and the producers couldn't figure out how to put towns in their game during that time. Meanwhile, FFXIV started production around the same time (August 2005 according to Wikipedia, take it with a grain of salt), using the same graphics engine, and they have been able to do that and so much more.

Granted, XIV's in-game graphics aren't as good as XIII (in terms of raw polygons being pushed, I much prefer XIV's art style), but it shows that the engine they are using is perfectly capable of creating a vibrant world, they just got lazy and felt like they could cut content out because, hey, it's a numbered FF release, it'll make money. Hell, if Versus XIII can pull off putting towns in their game, there's really no excuse.
