Leaderboard: Ultima Online vs. EverQuest vs. Asheron's Call

Apr 2nd 2012 2:10PM (Massively)
While UO was my first love, and the first time I ever got mugged online, and EQ probably ate up more of my time than the other two put together, I'll have to go with AC.

AC had a sense of adventure and mystery that has yet to be surpassed. Mountains weren't something to disguise the border of a zone, they were there to be explored. The world seemed enormous and mysterious, and had fantastic atmosphere.

I think AC was the last time I felt like I'd logged onto a proper virtual world, as opposed to a collection of fantasy themed levels.

I remember the water annoyed me though. I was just blue textured land that you sunk to your knees in.

Perpetuum expands the sandbox with player-built settlements

@Bartlebe

I tried it a few weeks back, and while I liked it a lot, the population seemed to have gone below critical levels. There was an average of 100 in the general chat channel, and the market was basically dead.

Anarchy Online's future is so bright, it's gotta wear shades

"She reports that while the team was happy to show off the upgraded graphics engine this past week, there's still a ways to go before it hits live."

No, really? I'm shocked! At this stage I'm going to play it safe and assume that "a ways to go" equals "jeez, we better start looking at doing that new graphics engine sometime this decade".

Gods & Heroes letter brings dire tidings

Indeed, spot the shill.

I tried out G&H with a truck load of optimism, as it was exactly the kind of setting I love. When it came down to it though, it just wasn't very good. It was ok, there were a few interesting ideas and nothing seemed fundamentally broken, but at the same time it was completely and utterly ordinary, and did nothing to make you want to keep playing it rather than any of a dozen other mmos.

The Soapbox: Nobody's hero

@Lenn

I rather think the bitterness comes from the fact that the 'hero model' mmo is relatively new to the genre. We were given a glimpse of what virtual worlds could be very early on in the emergence of the mmos, only to see it smothered by the everyone-wins affairs, which, to be honest, I find painfully patronising.

I'm not six years old anymore, I don't need a pat on the back and a reward for doing the simplest things, yet this is exactly what you get in almost any modern mmo.

Oh yeah, that looks positively lethal. Nothing like having the courage to follow your own artistic vision and not trying to follow the market.

Well done.

Buy it cheap now, and make one of every class. If EQ2 is anything to go by, you'll get to keep them when it goes F2P.

Brilliant! Back to my bard with his do-it-yourself spells!

The Daily Grind: What game would you play if it had an alternate gameplay server?

Mar 9th 2012 8:46AM (Massively)
I'd have been in Darkfall in an instant if there was anything but a free for all PvP option. Archeage when it's released too - it's looking spectacular, but if I have to spend my night being some emotionally stunted kid's entertainment, I won't be playing. The faction vs faction sounds really good, but if you allow same faction PvP there's always some moron who will spend their entire time ganking in the start area of their own faction.

I'd love to see an Eve server where you keep your ship after a death, or at least get the full value including fittings. Learning PvP in Eve too much grind for too little fun, at least when you're learning. I'd hate to be the one trying to balance the economy for it mind you.

Anarchy Online's new graphics engine wows Funcom

Oh no, Funcom. You're not getting me with the ol' "The new graphics engine is nearly done!" thing again. Keep your shiny screenshots, I've been hurt too often before.
