One Shots: Can you believe they put that in an MMO?

Apr 1st 2012 4:05PM (Massively)
When I saw 'One Shots' I got terribly excited.

Of course, it was a lie for April Fool's. Not funny, Massively.

The Daily Grind: Are MMO players tired of beefcake?

Mar 26th 2012 6:46PM (Massively)
I am female and I only play females, so I have to speak from that angle. Am I sick of seeing beefcake? If you're speaking of the Neanderthalithic steroid abusers specifically, then: Yes. Oh yes. Very tired. It's not a look I'm not at all fond of in real life, and seeing it in game after game is eye-rollingly boring and tiring.

Cut out the steroid abuse. Not every male PC needs to be more ripped than Schwarzenegger's Conan, just like not every female PC needs to have big breasts and a tiny waist. They're both valid complaints.

The Daily Grind: How many games have you committed to in your gaming history?

Mar 25th 2012 6:16PM (Massively)
EQ1 was my introduction to the MMO world. Played the hell out of it for a few years, even after my hubby (we started it together) had quit.
DAoC was my second love, and my introduction to PvP, which I loved in that game and have not found that same love for PvP in any game since.
CoH is a game that has always been installed on my computer, though I did take a break between the 'ED patch' and the release of CoV. It's seldom my 'primary game', but it's one hell of a secondary, and thus has seen me subscribed nearly continuously.
SWG is a game I wish I'd played even more of, but the friends who wanted to play OTHER games kept dragging me away from it. R.I.P. my Creature Handler, I refused to log you in post-NGE and thus you went down into SWG's sunset as one still.
WoW deserves a nod, because I did find frivolous enjoyment for a few months, and then kept playing a couple months longer for friends, before I realized that I'd played too long, and my burnout had turned to hatred.
EQ2 is one I have a strange relationship with. Whenever I'm playing it, it's my 'most favoritest game EVER!', but I eventually drift away, and it becomes little more than 'oh, that was a fun game.'. I usually make my way back to the game, but it's been a while now- will I return again?
LotRO is a game I play (and love playing) for many months, and then take a break from, and though I'm on break right now- I know I'll be back. My lifetime sub here was well worth it.

There were many more that, while I might have played for a few months, I never reached true commitment to- and thus they get little more than a nod: Anarchy Online, DDO, Fallen Earth, WAR, Guild Wars. I won't list the ones that didn't even last 3 months. :p

The Soapbox: Nobody's hero

Mar 23rd 2012 5:18PM (Massively)
@ntellect
YES. YES YES YES, YES YES.

I am SO SICK of being The Hero in an MMO, automatically, frequently starting at level one. While I would like to eventually become Heroic in some ways, I have zero interest in being The Hero.

I don't need to see the carrot being dangled in front of my nose. I don't need a game to hold my hand. I don't need neon signs pointing my way down what is ALREADY a one-way street. The treadmill is becoming more and more visible due to all this.

I, too, want to be Uncle Owen. (Well, Aunt Beru in my case). Even Owen & Beru have heroic possibilities.

The Daily Grind: Who was your MMO mentor -- and whom did you mentor?

Mar 21st 2012 5:51PM (Massively)
I didn't have a mentor. When I started at the launch of EQ1, pretty much everyone was on even footing. We were all learning as we went. It was fantastic.

I mentored a great many people back in those days. I was eager to meet new players then, eager to help them learn. Many of them even eventually applied to my guild (which was a high end raiding guild) once they reached max level, I guess because I'd left a good impression. I remember them all fondly.

I'm not so eager to seek out new players anymore. It's not that I'm not happy to help, I still am, it's that I've had many very bad experiences with players since those early days, bad experiences that have soured me to being open and welcoming. I still try, now and then, and I'm still eager to answer questions new players have... I'm just not so eagerly giving aid and my time as I used to. I've been taken advantage of too many times for that.

I AM SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS!

The Soapbox: Voice chat is the worst thing ever

Mar 20th 2012 5:42PM (Massively)
I will only use voice chat if required to for a raid, and then I will only remain in the chat if it is being used by the raid leaders to give targets and information, and then I will only remain in it for the length of the raid.

I simply cannot handle a dozen+ people chatting directly into my brain. It gives me a massive migraine to have someone squeal excitedly, or have five people start chatting at once. I mean, I will rip off the headset and run from the computer, off to hide in a quiet & dark place, completely forgetting it's on and I was logged into a game until I recover... even if I was in the middle of killing a raid boss.

Plus, yes, when I'm playing in a game, I want to be PLAYING IN A GAME. Voice chats degenerate into real life conversations far too often, especially if you're in chat with RL friends. Who did what, went where, slept with who, got into a fight over what, oh and did you see what happened at work, did you hear...
Ugh.
Or there's the endless discussions of game stats.
Ugh.
Or the ridiculous comments certain people make to me/about me because I'm female.
UGH. (Especially this one, UGH, guys I've been gaming online since the internet was BBSes, GET OVER IT.)
Just let me get lost in the game world and PLAY MY GAME.

I've never played Wasteland, and I didn't play (and fall in love) with the first 2 Fallouts until they'd been out for a few years. I'm still very excited about this, though, and I still donated to the Kickstarter, because the whole 'old school RPG' thing has my heart all aflutter!

Choose My Adventure: Dark Age of Camelot, week one

Mar 14th 2012 5:55PM (Massively)
Midgard forever!!

I voted hybrid, but that's partially because oh my gosh even all these years later, Hammer of Mjollnir remains one of my favorite abilities EVER. Being part a line of Thanes atop a keep doing a synchronous Hammer summoning as a wave of over a hundred Albs stormed the keep is forever, oh, FOREVER burned in my memory as one of my greatest gaming experiences ever. Giant blue hammers from the sky slamming down onto the heads of the incoming enemy.... *happy sigh*.

But the ability remains awesome outside of that situation, as well. :p

There are other good hybrids, too, like Skalds! But the Thane is where my DAoC heart remains.

Hah, I voted DAoC before reading the comments, and was absolutely NOT expecting to see it in first place.

I hope it wins!
