I had a girlfriend like that... Cheated on me then came back apologizing. It never worked out between us.
Funny metaphor, sure, but it's the same thing. They knew what they were doing and didn't bother to evaluate the consequences. Most of what makes the game boring is just not going to be "fixed" overnight, if at all.
@WeirdJedi: I think you need to redefine your definition of "polished". Polished gameplay is a game that is genuinley fun to play, from fighting to exploring, crafting and everything else. While Star Trek Online had some interesting features, it was far from fun to play. And while it had cool visuals, they weren't that great. I can't speak for content, but I doubt it was the reason people quit.
Speaking of Lego Universe, I played everything in this game. It took me 3 full days. When I said "start small", I didn't mean single-player small. Also, while I really like the visuals (they're great, but not awesome), and had fun playing it, the gameplay has some very serious issues. Moderated chat is just asking for troubles, and I'm not even speaking of the "lego building" part of the game.
You can't understand why a game failed if you're not critical enough of its features.
I quite agree with D-Bit, people did quit WoW for a lot of other online games. There always was an oppotunity for people to switch from WoW to something else, but most of the alternatives were bad.
It's relatively simple, in fact, to beat WoW (in theory), but it can only be done in the long run. You do just as WoW did: start small, very polished and keep adding quality content. When World of Warcraft started it started very small and was polished to death (gameplay, graphics, everything). I know, there were bugs at first, but these were quickly fixed in the first two weeks.
You just can't expect to "beat", or be in competition, with World of Wacraft the way it is right now... It has years of added content and polishing. You figure out instantly who's full of shit when they say they can.
It was the Ishva Mal that dropped the Robe of the Ishva. Man, the memories. There is a funny story that comes with it.
A friend and I had mastered this dungeon and we would claim it ours for some time. We'd found a tight little spot, right next to the Ishva Mal, where we'd log off before the servers went down for patching. When It would come back up we were so quick on logging in and kill that gnoll that we sparked a rumor that the Ishva Mal was bugged. It lasted several weeks lol.
The days of Everquest were the worst... I remember Plane of Air was the worst, it was a whole weekend deal non stop.
My personal worst was several days (5-6), sleeping on the couch with my headset in case my monster would pop (it would make noise and wake me up). It was in the Splitpaw dungeon in the Karanas, if I remember correctly. The gnoll would drop an insanely rare robe. I did get it, but not long after it was made common for an epic quest :-S
That was my lowest point which never happened again ;)
