The Perfect Ten: MMO cataclysms

Dec 8th 2010 5:22AM (Massively)
Too funny.

I was just browsing an old SW forum I used to visit reading through a few of my old posts and came across this one (http://holonet.swrpgnetwork.com/showthread.php?postid=147327#post147327). In it, I responded to a person complaining that the learning curve was steep and that you couldn't play a character of the likes of Luke, Han or Leia let alone a Jedi. I replied why that was a GOOD THING.

It's ironic that every reason mentioned in that post as to why SWG was great was later invalidated by SOE, which is why it became to many of us such a horrible game.

@Colin

You've yet to answer my original question - what benefit does it bring to readers?

It's obviously an annoyance to many. It's contrary to any other website I visit. How many major websites do you browse where they're a subdomain of their parent org? Does cnn.com redirect to cnn.timewarner.com?

Please. The only benefit this brings is to Joystiq in giving them recog they wouldn't otherwise have had. I don't care how 'big' they are, they certainly never made it to my radar before.

Instead it should be obvious this change will diminish the Massively brand and makes readers wonder about what's next. Whoever made the decision wasn't thinking things through.

Nah. I dropped the old feed early yesterday and added the lovely one from joystiq. I still had a couple dups this morning. That said, I don't seem to have any dups since.

@Colin

Well, one immediate thing that comes to mind is that it allows cookies to be shared with the main joystiq website and its other subdomains.

When I go to Massively, I want to know that any cookies it creates will only be used for Massively. By making Massively a subdomain, that's no longer the case.

Question - why does my RSS reader keep getting dup postings since the site revamp?

Question - what benefit does changing the domain used to browse this site bring to its customers?

I don't care that Banana Republic is owned by Gap Inc. I don't want to see ba.gapinc.com or even gap.gapinc.com in the address bar (nor would Gap ever consider doing such a messy thing), so why do you think I want to see massively.joystiq.com?

Don't panic -- Massively's getting a makeover! [Update #5]

"We'll get a new URL too -- massively.joystiq.com .... [That we're a part of the Joystick network is] just going to be a bit more obvious now."

Why? What a silly and confusing change. I don't care who 'owns' massively any more than any other company. I don't want to be redirected to a subdomain.

Poor decision. Hopefully you retract it just as Blizzard did with the real name fiasco.

I suppose you must not enjoy playing LotRO, either. I mean, your toon must feel so inadequate compared to Gandalf, Aragorn, Frodo, et al. It must really diminish the RP experience and opportunities for you.

"This bothers me as both a roleplayer and a person with a clear picture of my own importance in the grand scheme of things."

Seriously, it sounds more like you suffer a bit for Munchkinism if not outright Godism (or whatever the proper roleplaying term is for players who like to impose actions/thoughts on others).

Darkfall teases character model upgrades and more

Oct 16th 2010 9:36AM (Massively)
Darkfall really does have beautiful scenery. The character models are certainly different than in other MMOs - I always thought the elves at least had a goth feel - but I still thought they were nice. It'll be interesting to see the new models live.

PS - pls don't feed trolls. Let them starve on their own inadequacies. ;)

Earthrise teases new beta screenshot, reminds players of SWG

Sep 29th 2010 3:53AM (Massively)
As a former SWG player from launch who's also pretty interested in PvP games live EVE, Face of Mankind and Darkfall, I have to say I'm very happy that Earthrise will be bringing in PvP.

I don't think PvP was well implemented in SWG, though. Hopefully MS has incorporated the best from the above games.

World of Darkness confirmed, based on Vampire: The Masquerade

Sep 25th 2010 9:49AM (Massively)
You can say that again! And I'm glad to hear they will focus on "player politics and social interaction". If that holds true, I'd expect it won't be yet another themepark game but hopefully another addition to the sandbox. Here's hoping they don't go for 'mass market appeal' (esp. given the current fascination with vampires in books and films) and turn it into yet another WoW clone that revolves around grinding loot and levels.
