MMO Family: A parent's look at Lord of the Rings Online

Oct 26th 2010 8:46PM (Massively)
Please note that you have the option of turning off specific chat channels. On your child's account you can turn off /ooc, /advice, /regional, /trade, what have you. I know some disable all channels except for their kinship channel. You can also block private tells from people not on your friends list. Of course, your kid could just as easily turn these back on, but that's another issue entirely.

LotRO's radiance to be run over by a train and other future tidbits revealed

Sep 9th 2010 11:27AM (Massively)
Again, the pop-culture references are so subtle, you wouldn't know they were there unless you were intimately familiar with the referenced material.

Case in point: Firefly reference was a consumable 'fluff' item from a festival - Saffron's Lipstick - which caused your target to use the /faint emote. That's it. The tooltip made no reference to firefly, Joss Whedon or " the 'verse'".

Quit taking yourselves to seriously.

The Road to Mordor: Enedwaith Exploration Expo

I do recall A turbine rep specifically saying that the instances will be accessible anywhere, much like the skirmish system. Saves someone trekking out to the middle of nowhere to summon, I suppose. I'd post a source if I weren't so lazy.

Essentially , they're using some of tech from the skirmish system to get people inside the instance, and to scale it (to level only).

E3 2010: Lord of the Rings Online Vol 3 Book 2 preview of Enedwaith [Updated]

I think at this point, old-world refers to Shadows of angmar content.

I'd like to also confirm that the scaling refers to level and not to size, even though I'd like to run Helegrod as a 12-man instead of a 24. Getting that many people together takes way too long.

As for avoiding moria, don't. The epic questline makes up less than 10% of the content there, and there are some really spectacular places. Also, most of the V2 line is soloable. There are just 5 group instances to complete before you get your legendary capstone trait. And 5 after that to finish the book. Some of these are 3-man instances as well. On Brandywine, people are running these daily.

Turbine announces LotRO Welcome Back Week

That's correct. You can play as a Warg (stealth class), Giant spider (CC / ranged), And a variety of Uruks / Orcs : 2 different Healer Types, 1 Ranged and 1 classic Melee type. Monster players cannot leave the Ettenmoors zone.

Within the PvP zone it's pretty much a free for all, but at peak hours there's usually a lot of raid vs raid open field battles, keep taking and the like. It's been a neglected part of the game for a while, but people keep showing up on both sides. I hope to see some LoTRO PvP related news at E3 in a few weeks.

Codemasters extends LotRO spring festival

Apr 20th 2010 9:06AM (Massively)
The North American Servers are also extending the festival. I believe there are 2 reasons behind this:
1) They messed up one of the major rewards - the festival horses, and are staying open so everyone can get their mounts.
2) The 3 Year Anniversary of LoTRO going live to the public.

The Daily Grind: When are in-game titles too much?

Apr 2nd 2010 8:50AM (Massively)
You've got many things going on here:
Seargeant at Arms: PvP rank
Benhamine....: actual character name
BaneofSalsa..: cosmetic surname
Victorious runekeeper...: Title
Gallant few: Kinship (Guild)

Yoe can toggle any of these off except for the actual character name, which in this case it so long , it's downright silly in itself.

The Digital Continuum: The trouble with sticking to MMOs page 2

Mar 30th 2010 3:54PM (Massively)
I've not been playing MMOs for a long time, but I've found a strategy that works. I play LoTRO, no other MMOs at the time. When a new expansion or update comes out, I play the new content, and work on levelling an alt for a few weeks. I take a break and play some FPS or take a break from gaming altogether. Having a lifetime sub offers flexibility to come and go as you please.

The Daily Grind: Would you pay for a trial?

Feb 25th 2010 9:00AM (Massively)
I'd like to point out that LoTRO has been offering a free trial for something like 2 years. I haven't seen a gold spammer in over a year playing almost every day. If you are on a trial and spam, any player can right click on your name in the chat window and select 'report as spammer and ignore' If you're on a trial, this means you get locked out of public channels until a mod unblocks you.
If you put proper limitations on Trial accounts, then it's not hard to lock them out.

I'll reiterate as I did in the other thread that once you introduce a monetary transaction, you've made your relationship with that company less casual. If you want me to try your product, offer a glimpse for free. I'm not saying it's right or wrong, but I am saying that by making this one more hurdle, they'll exclude a large segment of their potential market. Perhaps its illogical, but popular sentiment rarely is.

Yes I have a credit card, and yes do and have handed out my credit card to several mmos / online game stores.

Darkfall introduces seven day trial for one dollar

Feb 24th 2010 11:32AM (Massively)
Okay, 1 dollar. You've already lost me. I don't want to give out my creditcard to every mmo out there. As soon as you included ANY monetary transaction, you're already cutting out many potential trial players. Make it free or don't bother.
