World PvP, dungeon experiences, and quality of life in Guild Wars 2

May 16th 2011 8:03PM (Massively)
It should also be said that, yes, dungeons do have a specific story mode. Rather, story mode isn't really an extension of your character's personal story. Some believed, for example, that you'd have to get to a certain part of your personal story in order to experience a dungeon's story mode, but they clarified that dungeons and the personal story system are separate.

Activision Blizzard: RIFT players will come back to WoW

May 10th 2011 11:14PM (Massively)
It seems to me that a lot of people put far too much emphasis on the headline.

Mike made a simple statement: when a new MMO is released, it tends to be the case that some number of people leave to check it out, and in time a decent number of those people return.

He also acknowledged that "subscriber levels have decreased faster than during previous expansions," and said Blizzard would attempt to release content at a faster pace.

It's amusing to me that some took offense to Mike's comments, as if he's not supposed to be positive about his product. Though this is the comments section of an MMO news site, so ... I suppose this is the sort of thing one should expect.

The Secret World readying seven years of content, new trailer released

Apr 7th 2011 6:00PM (Massively)
People keep pointing out "eh, it's Funcom" as if Funcom = Age of Conan. As far as I know, The Secret World isn't being developed by the same team. At the least, Ragnar Tornquist != Gaute Godager.

Anyway, interesting trailer.

Damn, Trion. You done good.

Blizzard 20-year anniversary retrospective video now online

Mar 8th 2011 5:08AM (WoW)
For me, this video was both interesting and inspiring. I love that some of them felt so drawn to the company; that some of them had this sense of "alright, this is home ... this is where I belong." :)

Guild Wars 2 blog updates with Norn lore entry

I must say, this was a very well done update. :)

Guild Wars 2's Norn week starts Monday

Feb 18th 2011 8:05PM (Massively)
Awesome. I've been keeping up with Guild Wars 2 news, but I know little about the lore and even less about the Norn specifically. I'm looking forward to this!

"WoW in space": Bungie's MMOFPS named Destiny

Feb 17th 2011 12:50PM (Massively)
I love that the game being a MMOFPS isn't enough to distinguish it from WoW for some people. An unnamed source says it's "WoW in space" and that alone is enough to send them running.

BioWare: WoW is the "touchstone" for The Old Republic

Feb 10th 2011 5:56PM (Massively)
@sleepr

Thanks for that link.

"With Morhaime's presence on the stage noted, Zeschuk and Muzyka were then asked how they hope to compete in the massively multiplayer online space, and in particular, what can they bring to the table. Zeschuk began by noting that World of Warcraft remains the touchstone in the industry, and it proves that big games still work. He also said that because of WOW's influence, it is important to maintain the standards that the game established.

That said, Zeschuk noted that anyone who plays Star Wars: The Old Republic will see that it is a BioWare game. Second, he said that they aren't going out there to beat anyone, in that they aren't positing the game as the oft-feared, never-materialized WOW killer. Lastly, Zeshuck said that delivering superior service is of the utmost importance for BioWare, even if it is an incredibly intimidating project to take on."

I'm still not totally certain what was meant by that statement, but this definitely shows that more context would have been helpful.

BioWare: WoW is the "touchstone" for The Old Republic

Feb 10th 2011 5:12PM (Massively)
While this statement doesn't exactly make me respect BioWare more, "plucking a potentially controversial statement from a speech/interview/whatever without offering the larger context" articles aren't worthy of respect, either.

Let's see what else was said. If there was a back and forth taking place, let's see some of that. What drove him to make that statement? Did he also at some point mention how TOR is unique? Did he offer any clarification at all as to what "rules" he was speaking of? Was he part of a panel with a Blizzard guy, and possibly just being flattering?

All in all, this is some annoying "journalism." (I know: it's not real journalism.) Hey, this adds fuel to the fire. Let's report it. Oh, and don't waste time reporting on what noncontroversial things were said.
