Massively Speaking Episode 83: Fallen Earth's Lee Hammock

Jan 6th 2010 3:49PM (Massively)
Very nice interview. Fallen Earth is my new love in MMO genre and its future keeps looking more and more promising. I am also very glad to hear that they are trying to stick to one-server structure as it is a major drawing point for me.

The Daily Grind: Do you need the box?

Jan 4th 2010 5:57PM (Massively)
While I would love to buy games in a box, especially if it is a long-awaited game, most of the time it is simply not an option in my case. The reason for it is simple - I live in a small country in a corner of Europe called Latvia and getting a box over here on time and for a reasonable price is often out of the question. Because of that development of digital distribution has been a godsend for me and I end up regularly buying games from Direct2Drive, Steam, or directly from the publisher.

It is also very convenient. I have been playing games for over 10 years and the hundreds of CDs are starting to take up space. Having a digital copy that you can download whenever you want instead is helpful.

Anti-Aionsed: This time I put the joke of the title before the colon pt. 2

I must say I am truly surprised by the "no soul" part of the article particularly because I have been looking for it in a MMO for quite a long time and Aion is where I have found it for the first time since WoW. I guess it may be a matter of taste. A lot of commenters mentioned LotRO as the game with a soul, but despite my love for Tolkien's books I could not find it in the game myself.

Aion surprised me in that regard actually because I did not expect to find it in an Asian game due to my past experience. I like the lore of Aion even if it is not overly original and most of the things in the game seem to make sense to me. The world in the game itself does not feel as artificial to me as what I have grown used to with MMOs, but based on comments it appears others feel the opposite.

In any case, for the first time in a long while I feel confident in saying that I have found a MMO to call "home".

The Daily Grind: The journey versus the destination

Aug 27th 2009 11:46AM (Massively)
I have the "smell the roses" approach. To me there is no point to playing the game if you do not have fun doing so. Also, rich lore and storytelling are in general very important to me, so I am the type who will stop to read all the texts and look at the surroundings. It is actually one of the main reasons why I prefer to level solo even in MMOs, if I am going through the storyline for the first time. Few people have the patience to wait and I want to enjoy the game at my own pace.

As a result I tend to dislike games that have too much grind and are poor on the story and setting side. Quest-driven advancement is preferred to mindless slaughter of thousands of monsters in the most efficient way.

Fallen Earth beats out Aion in D2D sales last week

The game is actually far from being bad. I am pretty confident that it will find its niche and there are few other games with such a setting. It is not the most technologically advanced, but it actually looks better in motion than on the screenshots and there is a surprising amount of detail to the "wasteland". Besides, there are plenty of MMOs that are popular and have way worse graphics.

Personally I am still on the fence myself. I would have likely bought it if not for the Champions Online and Aion being released the same month. Maybe I will get FE if the other two will disappoint me in the long run.
