In my experience games like WoW become quite boring as soon as i reached the level cap. WoW's so called endgame is more or less the same as leveling just with items instead of experience points. It's still character progression but much slower and much more grindy and repetitive so i'm not rushing towards it.
Pure Numbers don't tell anything - nonetheless they should stay on a manageable scale.
What i don't like is when a high level charakter has 200x the health does 500x the damage of a beginner. Such things are just to unrealistic for my taste. If you get hit by an arrow you bleed, regardless if it was shot by a lousy goblin or a highly trained arcane archer.
Although WoW becomes worse from day to day in my opinion i think it deserves this title. It had a huge impact on the industry and still has. It's the game everyone is talking about - even politicians. Ask anyone on the street: chances are that he at least heard of WoW.
I'm an egoistic person so as long as a game is still fun overall i play it - even if i dislike some aspects of it. If a game goes to far in the wrong direction i cancel. This may be triggerd by a certain change but is always based on a couple of reasons.
The holy trinity is one approach to encourage group play and establish class synergy. It is certainly well suited for a game like WoW or other similar MMOs.
However, it's not the only valid approach - you need a class system that fits to your gameplay and if your gameplay is different there might be better alternatives. A game with damage dealers only can work out as well, as long as the synergetic effects of grouping are noticeable enough.
In a less combat centric rpg there might be room for roles which have not much to do with combat at all.
