SWTOR launch day questions answered

Sep 25th 2011 6:21PM (Massively)
@crazypoker In a way, when you think about it, its brilliant. People will still buy the box but by nature of being less than a week from Christmas, not everyone who gets the game will be able to spend an insane amount of time on it...lessening the initial server crush.

Add to that people who pre-ordered having a least a few days head start, you really have three "tiers" of people starting at different dates. This will probably, to a degree, help starting zone/server performance.

(just speculation)

I really hope they offer a lifetime sub at some point, or even a yearly sub rate. I know this EA we're talking about, so i won't hold my breath.

I'm more than willing to drop $250-$300 for a lifetime sub and not have to even think about the $15 a month.

And man, between now and Dec 20th is going to break my bank: CE of this $150; CE of Arkham City, $100; Normal edition of Skyrim, $60, christmas shopping, not to mention blu-rays of Captain America and others, and a NYC trip.

That's okay, eating is over-rated anyway.

John Smedley talks free-to-play across the industry

The truth is that this is a smart move for DCUO though...Champions is F2P, CoH is going F2P, there is no way a sub based MMO which was already seemingly in trouble could survive against two relatively well regarded free to play games.

Now, a major IP will have a F2P game that will draw in kids and people curious about the game. Some of those will stay, use the cash shop a little bit and bring revenue to the game. DC has gotten a lot of press lately with their comics relaunches. The Dark Knight Rises and Man of Steel coming out soon gives even more media exposure that the game can latch onto for marketing.

I think, short term, this is going to help the game stay afloat. Long term, who knows?

I had Guild Wars years ago, and came back within the last year. I had to rebuy Prophecies as my old account had been hacked in my absence, but I quickly fell in love with the game in a way I hadn't the first time around. I have all three campaigns now, but I'd love to find a newbie friendly guild to play with!

I agree Phil, I'm pleasantly surprised at how fun i find STO thus far. I'm gonna test some more over the weekend, and if nothing huge and glaring kills it for me, I'll be pre-ordering.

Trooper, Smuggler, and BH all look awesome...but man, there is just something about having the lightsaber and being able to choke the hell out of someone from a distance...
