The Virtual Whirl: User interfacing

"General purpose virtual environments." Think Second Life, and the late There.

The Virtual Whirl: Ill-repute

Honestly, Acelin, I just don't see how those bits can be read as attacking gamers or anybody else. The point is, we all spend money on things that make us happy, and this is healthy and normal.

The Virtual Whirl: A crisis of confidence

Among the topics to be discussed at the First Church of Rosedale tomorrow (noon SLT!) is the feasibility of building outposts on other grids. The End Times are upon us, and the Spirit of Phil lies elsewhere now.

The Virtual Whirl: Linden Lab short-lists viral poultry for humanitarian prize

Hmm. It would be hard for them to use this as a tax writeoff inasmuch as the award is in L$, and Linden Lab claims that L$ has no real monetary value.

Linden Lab to crack down on events listing spam. Again

I could not disagree more with FlipperPA on this one. Profiles are very useful as-is, and there's already a Web tab if you want to direct people elsewhere.

Event listings are useful as well, but I agree that there are several issues that ought to be addressed. The guidelines for posting do indeed need to be overhauled; as you say, there are institutions and clubs that have many legitimate events a day. The major distinction needs to be made between an actual time-bound *event* and advertising something with no particular time constraints.

They also need to upgrade the underlying infrastructure so that it's possible to post PG, Mature, or Adult events on Adult land, just as it's possible to post PG or Mature events on Mature land. (Currently you can post them ONLY as PG, which displays as PG on the Web and as Adult in the SL client.)

Finally, they ought to provide a way of easily reporting events that violate the [revised] guidelines, ideally with a "Report Spam" button under the event itself. (Currently there isn't even a category for it in "Report Abuse," and using THAT would be painfully tedious anyway.)

(Granted, I define "geek" pretty widely.)

Anecdotally, I'd say the proportion of geeks is FAR higher, almost to the extent of being ubiquitous, but that may say more about the kind of people I hang out with than anything else.

"Property" in this case amounts to a metaphor for servers. Somebody needs to pay for 'em...

Dodgy Second Life viewer doing the rounds

Speaking as the pastor of the First Church of Rosedale, Our Lord most certainly is still at the Lab! He's no longer CEO, but he's chairman of the board. His projects since leaving the former role have included overhauling the map and working on Snowglobe.

While I personally agree, I would imagine Loki is referring to Zeus. :-)
