The Soapbox: On MMO negativity

I'm still looking for a good game of Rogue for Windows 7. They just don't design UNIX games like that anymore

Rakghouls and raging Hutts with SWTOR's Gabe Amatangelo

I wish the PUG group sign-ups were more automated - then having to constantly type in: L2M Healer & Tank etc.

I mean how hard would it be to code a system where a player clicks on a Flashpoint - and automatically signs up for the next run - just like a player automatically signs up for PvP action - and gets in?

OK - so you're saying you need certain types of classes? Well how hard would it be to code a system where you could either sign up for any-class PUG or a PUG that requires 1 or 2 general classes? i.e. you click on a flashpoint - then click on whether you want an any-class PUG group - or a Type-Class PUG group (usually meaning at least 1 Healer type & 1 Tank type)?

It's just seems like this system would be a whole lot easier on players - and methinks you would have a lot more groups doing flashpoints as well.

SWTOR goes bug hunting with 1.0.2 and prognosticates PvP improvements

Yeah - they need to put up some kind of bracket system or hueristic to even out teams a bit more during a warzone match. I've been PvP'ing quite a bit now for the last few weeks - and any team that either 1) has more 50s on it versus a none 50 team will usually own the other team - and it isn't fun being the victim or 2) when a team is obviously from one guild versus an ad hoc team - that too isn't fun, since the organization - likely on vent will own an ad hoc non-organized match.

And at least on my server - the reason why Siths are winning so much is simply because in most matches - the toons are higher matched. When there is some equal levels than the fight gets interesting.

I also like the fact that deaths are not so instant in the game - i.e. you don't get so much stunlock - one shot crap you get in so many other MMOs. It should take a bit to take down a toon - not a single assassin sneaking up from behind you with his buddy ready to blow you away once you're stunned. That ain't PvP - it's moronic I win button play.

Research firm: SWTOR has 350,000 peak concurrent users

The Achilles heel for SWTOR for long term sustainability, does appear to be its obvious linear approach to content - as opposed to sandbox - and whether after a year goes by - and the first wave of subscribers have pretty much completed the main story line - and done a few alts - will stick around for more - or look for fresher ground in a very competitive market right now.

Another question is - what is the ratio of burn rate for players? It seems to me that there are quite a few pretty hardcore players on my server - that seem to be moving through the mainline material pretty rapidly.

So - will SWTOR cater mostly to casual players - and not offer much hope for the - say college end - mostly Sith players LOL - who burn through everything in 6 months? Then what?

@Miffy F2P I think will eventually prove itself to be a short term business model for adopting MMOs - I think many players will go weary of the corporate money pitch for everything under the sun in the game they are playing.

IMO the subscription model will prove to be the only sustainable MMO model for longterm growth and expansion.

@Aquaryon Why do so many players want to play the villains? ;)

@Muloktoo Reminds me of the students in Junior High or High School who would cut in the lunch lines. What makes them so special? It's self-serving and usually the kids who have the attitude of "me first" are also bullies and miscreants.

It's kinda of funny too - playing #SWTOR finding that among the Sith Dark Side players - some (not all) fit the bill perfectly.

Most computer games will have bugs.

An exploit often uses bugs to cheat. Pretty simple in fact - most exploiters know that's what they're doing i.e. cheating.

The Road to Mordor: Wish lists, past and future

Players have been asking for Housing improvement since it first came out - of which LOTRO devs did almost diddley squat on - for years.

Now - I suppose they might do something. I'll believe it when I see it.
