I rarely give a damn about the story. I enjoy fighting other players and working with groups of players to achieve objectives through PvP. To me.. Fighting against and with other players is fascinating. I grew up playing games like Wolfenstien, Doom, and Wing Commander and while I enjoyed all of those games I always felt like there was something missing and no matter what the difficulty level was set to the AI was always so predictable. Once you played the game for an hour or two you already knew how the AI would react to almost any situation and countering them was done with near mind numbing ease. Granted, video game AIs have improved significantly since then and there are times when you can guess what other players are going to do it before they do it in MMO PvP, but unlike with the AI it’s still simply a guess. I suppose I just like the ‘randomness’ that large scale PvP brings to the table. It’s uncertain, mostly unscripted, and it’s a hellva lot of fun to listen to people screaming on TS or Vent as their ship in EvE goes down in flames, their character in Darkfall is slaughtered, or their wanna be twink in WoW is pwned and their epeen is removed in one clean swipe. I’ve had my fair share of PvP catastrophes, but if I won all of the time I would get bored.
I have a slew of questions, concerns, and comments regarding Dust 514, but I have to admit that it really is a brilliant move on CCP's part and it's nice to see companies trying to push the technology and ideology driving MMOs. The PC MMO pie is only so big and branching out into the console market does make sense. Don't get me wrong.. I think playing an FPS with your thumbs is a travesty, but I'm not going to rant.
Looking forward to seeing just how in depth the two games will be merged. I for see a number of issues stemming from in game communications alone. If you've ever flown in a 300+ man fleet you'll know just how important voice and text coms are, but organizing those channels (for voice and text) alone can be a daunting task. But.. I think along more PC centric lines. So, I guess I'll just have to try the game when it comes out and see for myself first hand.
Argh! A tag team of temptation! I've only written one gaming related article that is published online and it's not even about MMOs. Not much on the experience side I am afraid.
I was tempted to say some mean and hurtful things about it, but then I saw a screenshot with a dude rockin' an afro.. Now I'm inexplicably intrigued. The game looks kinda like WoW meets Streetfighter with oversized heads, but that afro.. Something about that fro.
Run around naked and get ganked while trying to learn initial stages of the game.
Realize that if you run around naked you will inevitably get ganked by everyone including your own race and allies.
Decide to join a guild for a semblance of safety and hopefully some more fun.
First thing the guild teaches you is how to Macro in DF and they send you a link for AutoHotKey and then email you various scripts for harvesting and spell casting.
Guild also teaches you about afk swimming and the benefits therein.
Every week is shark week.
Begin to realize that there really isn't much difference in the base stats of the various races and there is zero benefit in being a giant wolfman that turns into an arrow cushion during every engagement.
Get drunk.
Seriously consider rerolling to be one of those little bastards that can wield swords twice their height with no issues what so ever.
Drunk again.
Follow guild up to some PvP city on an island in the north east and slaughter everyone that doesn't seem like they belong in your guild.
All interest is lost, account is canceled, GF wants you to meet her parents.
