Gating is just a way to slow people down and hold them back due to lack of content, well in the way it works in AoC i.e. in it's simplist form. complete this mission before you can do this content.

If used in some of the better ways mentioned above then maybe.

I /ragequit AoC and my croation based guild and haven't played it for over 2 months.

I basically was a loyal raider who 'never' messed up and my PC/bad con made me wipe us once (literally once) the RL was going mental on vent (I couldn't hear as my pc was screwed) but was sending me some pretty tasty tells (which everyone else couldn't read) and so I just left.

15 minutes later after some thinking I quit the guild (three toons) and stopped playing, I just thought I don't need this shit.

OP was usual crap from an AoC hater, same shit you fight daily on the mmorpg.com forums. I avoid those forums completely now, full of haters with awful moderation.

I think GFX are a bit like good looks. We as humans keep saying that they do not matter but really they do. A great game with sh1te GFX should be better than the reeverse but it doesn't always work out this way (and in the same way an ugly fat pig of a bird with a great personality, should be the best choice but nooooo we go for the smart looking chick who is a bitch!).

We are superficial with looks in RL or in a game.

With regard to your last part where people are willing to pay for a decent game, well I agree with this and I think this is why many p2p games are going to go f2p as they ARE decent games atm and so fit the move to f2p as there is a in the most part solid game underneath.

I play AoC and would certainly pay more for a awesome-sauce server like EQ2 did.

I would also like to add that I feel free to play is a model is some way ALL mmo's will be adopting to some degree. I can gaurantee all Developers are planning /cinsidering it right now whether they admit it or not. It is the future but there need sto be a shift from crappy Asian mmo's shafting players with cash shops (Allods) to a real working model.

Free to Play is here to stay and it change all mmo's forever.

I personally don't think f2p is bad and anyway no games have gone f2p they are all going free to try (ftt) or gimped to play (gtp) as with LOTRO.

If a cash shop of sorts means more development and bug squashing (yes AoC I am looking at you) then I am for it but then I can afford it. I would buy sparkle ponies for the games I like there I said it, having said that I would probably buy full T3 armour if a cash shop sold it, but that's just me.

Good point although it IS 2.5 years late... News isn't surprising, tbh this is the way things are going for all mmo company whether they come out and say it or not.

Personally I just want to play the games I like, if FC introduces this correctly in Europe I wouldn't mind but I want stuff to balance out my prepaid sub.

Of course there is the carrots like with LOTRO where Development appears to be speeding up nowwhich had been on the wain. Finally we might make it to Morder!!! :)
