Cities XL trailer offers glimpse of empires to build

Aug 19th 2009 4:22AM (Massively)
I think the concept of the game is really cool. Always loved these kind of games. The old beta client was somewhat disappointing though, but they released a 550+MB patch last week, which fixed a whole bunch of things. Also the interface is now totally different. On a first thought I really like all the changes they have done, but I can't say yet whether I'm going to buy this or not.

Guild Wars 2 news coming this week?

Aug 18th 2009 3:57AM (Massively)
I'm very looking forward to this game. The original Guild Wars and its expansions delivered me quite some fun. Played them for about 600 to 700 hours in total and still didn't get to do everything in the PvE mode.

The only thing I hope for is that they don't offer too much MT stuff. Or maybe they even offer both MT and a monthly fee, who knows? We'll see about how it'll work out, soon enough.

The Daily Grind: Instance vs. open

I really love open worlds like Vanguard for example. But when the thing gets too crowded you get the boss-campers into play, which isn't very fun at all. In the end developers have to make a choice between both, which is a really though choice to make.

You can of course have both in one game. But I like it when the world is totally open, and anyone can pop-up at any given time. I like to have a kind of immersive experience. One that gives me the fantasy of being part of an open world, rather than some part of the world where no one can come and I'm all alone with my buddies.

I don't know much about this game, but I find it very interesting to see that a game of 10+ years old still gets a little love every now and then.

Cities XL Limited Edition box contents revealed

If this turns out to be a solid game, they practically have a monopoly on their chunk of the MMO genre. Nobody has ever done this before, and if it turns out to be something good they will get a pretty solid following. Fans of the genre haven't got a decent new game since when? Pretty long time ago!

As a closed beta player I'm looking forward to the next big patch. Let's see what that brings and if I can still change my view on the game. The basics are there, but it's time for sauce and a cherry on top.

ArenaNet's co-founder comments on Jeff Strain's departure from NCsoft

I get it. But personally I think a team should work like a team. Not staff members who make the big bucks with slaves under them. The roles of masters and slaves need to be very tight and preferably non existent. If you base a game on one person's vision, it fails most of the time. If you have a development team without multiple thinkers on the working floor, you're tending to wander in the wrong direction.

Yes, there are brains and muscles, but the muscles have brains too, if you know what I'm saying :)

What I hate the most in video game business is when people try and walk away with THEIR name on some total package. Like Richard Gariot's Tabula Rasa for example. This makes it look as if he build all the stuff himself. Even some very cool classics like Metal gear Solid have this stamped on the front. Personally I think that's very egoistic of the person in charge.

Can you imagine (just sticking some names on there, don't take this seriously please):

Shigeru Miyamoto's Super Mario?
Nobuo Uematsu's Final Fantasy?
Dan Hauser's Grand Theft Auto?

Again, it makes it look like one person made a game, but in reality a whole team of 100 to 200 people is behind it. And again, in a good team you will wanting to hear what everybody has to say about certain game mechanics and stuff. If you listen to one or two persons you get failures like Vanguard. And you don't want 30 million down the drain, won't you? :)

One man does not make a game. The game will get done one day, with or without him.

Didn't see Watchmen yet, but I guess I don't have to anymore either. Thanks for ruining the movie! :)

@Kdolo

You focus a little to much on what I typed instead of the message behind it.

Of course an online RPG does not justify a monthly fee. Nor does any other game with simple online functionalities stamped onto them. A simple chatbox and guest room do not justify a monthly fee. A game with 12 vs. 12 combat, basic RPG elements, and a grid multi-player system do NOT justify a monthly fee. And (without calling names) in the next few months there ARE going to come such games on the market that will rip you off.

The gaming market would be better off when people could host their own servers and maybe pay the developers some tiny fee, like $1 tax payment or something.
