TERA sheds some light on open beta as test weekends draw to a close

Apr 4th 2012 7:06PM (Massively)
I honestly wasn't impressed with Tera enough to even care about upcoming tests or the launch. The action-oriented combat was fun up to a point, but it really felt like I was just sitting there spamming two buttons ad nauseum. Then I got to the capital city, did the quests there, and completely ran out of anything. I had a quest to go to another place, which I did, but there were no quests at all. I scratched my head for a while, signed off, then never got motivated enough to log back in again before the weekend was over.

I'm sure some people are going to love this game to death, but I'm equally sure it will have at least as much attrition as Aion did.

I had been waiting for 3.0 to try the game out again. Haven't touched it since shortly after launch. It's great that coming back won't cost me anything.

Who knows if I'll stick around. But at least it's a good opportunity to give the title a second chance.

I played Vanguard in beta and then at launch. For about a month.

I came back a couple years later and played for several months. My friends and I loved it, but we saw the writing on the wall. We just couldn't justify continuing to invest in a game that didn't look like was going to be around much longer.

Now that SoE is taking the whitewash to said wall, my friends and I are really looking forward to when it goes f2p. We will definitely be back because the game really is impressive in a lot of ways.

The Secret World pre-order packages feature beta access, lifetime sub, and more

I don't understand why your comment is being voted down so drastically. You didn't attack anyone. You didn't make some wild claim with nothing to back it up. You simply stated a personal preference and did so in a way that made it clear it's YOUR personal preference (as opposed to claiming that everyone else shared your view).

I feel differently than you do -- most physical stuff in CE's ends up only being glanced at by me and then never comes out of its box again. But I'm not so insecure in my own preference that I feel the need to vote down someone's opposing preference.

I'm going to need to hear a lot of positive from players in the beta weekends before I even think about pre-ordering this title.

As much as I love the things said about TSW so far, I've been to this dance with a member of the Funcom family before. She was one of those dates that was super sexy right up to the point where we got married. The honeymoon was scarcely over before all the negatives became obvious -- it was like she was a totally different person!

I remember all too well how AoC's open beta capped well before you got out of Tortage, and how different the game felt when you did. I also remember things like the "miracle patch" and a good number of features that were advertised right up to launch day but never did make it into the game at all!

TSW looks sexier than her big sister but I'm going to wait until other people have had ample time to see what she's REALLY like before I think about dating her.

Since the footage was uniformly choppy (as opposed to happening in specific environments where there were more assets in use) I think it was due to the monitor's refresh rate being out of sync with the camera that they were filming with.

I generally agree as well. The only CE's I'll even think about buying are the ones that have a quality figure. Halo Reach did it for me and that sculpture -- even though it's plastic -- looks great in my game room. All the other CE stuff like lithographs, audio CD, etc. basically get glanced at and then end up back in the box forever.

Of course, for that reason I'm seriously considering the GW2 CE. The Rytlock figure looks like he could be pretty awesome, especially since it's 10" high. I just wish I knew what it was made of (ie. polystone vs. plastic).

Somehow, I don't think it was SoE that chose that pic.

The thing is, Vanguard is built as a truly massive world without zones. However, there's only so much data your computer can actually hold. That's where chunking comes into play. It's an innovative way to create an environment where if you see it, you can get to it.

The world is still split up. There's just no way around that. Vanguard simply loads and unloads adjacent areas as you move across the landscape, transitioning you from one chunk to another when you cross the boundary line. The problem is that it doesn't always work perfectly. However, I never experienced the problems that you hear horror stories about. The worst that ever happened to me was a brief pause during which I'd suddenly float a couple feet off the ground and then drop back down.

They can't do away with chunks. To do so they would need to totally rebuild the world and do away with one of the very things (the accessibility) that serves as a draw for the game. The most that they can do is optimize the technology behind the chunks and hopefully with the new development team and modern computer tech they'll be able to crack that nut. If they can, Vanguard could very well set a new standard for game design.

I will definitely be back, as will three of my friends. We enjoyed the game a lot prior to the release of the newbie island. Unfortunately, we saw that while the devs themselves were anxious to keep building the game, SoE had little interest in promoting it. Other games came out that we drifted over to because they were seeing growth while Vanguard stagnated. We've always kept a place in our hearts for the game, but it was obviously in maintenance mode and seemed to be dying. We just couldn't justify investing our time in a title that looked like it wouldn't be around much longer.

If this now was just going f2p I don't think we'd really care. But the fact that they're bringing on a development team shows us that SoE is finally willing to give the game a real chance. That means that we're willing to as well. I'm looking forward to it!
