@(Unverified) I agree. I find it a similar situation to how I'm a computer/network nerd and enthusiast, but most people think of them as tools. A UI to me and most everyone is a means to what I want to do. If it's cumbersome and takes too much time to learn, why bother?
Also, I agree EVE's users are far more intelligent than CCP. And CCP is trying to do the impossible by making one UI that will suit everyone. With a game as deep as EVE, it's nigh impossible.
@Lateris The UI in EVE is clunky. It just is. For example, the "My Corporation" Nav button is the only place to find OTHER corp/alliances current wars. How does that make sense? That information should be in the standard information you get in a corp/alliance info page.
No one UI is good for everyone. Hell, no one UI is good for most people. That's partly why there's been simplification of UI over the years in the software industry. A simpler UI is more easily understood by a big population of users. It's not dumbing down; it's trying to conform to everyone through simplification.
There is always a better UI for an application. It's silly to think that nothing can ever be made better just because a person is comfortable with something. And besides, the UI's not the point. The gameplay is the point. An office worker doesn't want to learn the UI of a "smarter" version of Windows. Doing so only costs time and money to his/her employer. Likewise, a player doesn't want to waste free time and his/her subscription money learning a UI. The point is what you want to DO. In the same way computers are a hobby of entusiasts but just a tool to the rest of the world, a UI is only loved by those who like UI's. For me and most of the world, a UI is only a means to an end that should be simple to learn and afterwards invisible. When it gets clunky or in my way, it's not doing its job.
Simpler, more easily accessible and understandable UI without sacrificing features is the goal. I personally think the future of UI has to be automated personalization. A computer can analyze user interaction and automatically change the UI to suit a person. A little of this is in modern OS's. There are Most frequently used programs/files lists that update to a user's most accessed files for fast access.
I want one of the Skype headsets for my new laptop because I am on a 1,500 dollar budget and can't afford to get anything added to my laptop. PLEAZE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
