It was awesome at launch but failed to progress. It's taken them 2 years to bring out an expansion pack, when really lots of features needed filling out way before then.
Yep UI is horrible. I lasted an hour on it this morning and it's the most unwelcoming and difficult MMO I've experienced in a long time. The kind of thing I'd expect from something from Korean with a tiny budget. (Worse than the beta of RF Online).
Games aren't supposed to appeal to everyone and I personally like the technical aspects of EvE. In fact I think the general dumbing down of all games is a step in the wrong direction. I like to have to think about stuff without having it handed to me on a plate in some over simplified manner.
They seem to add less and less each expansion. CCP have massive amounts of cash and resources but they don't innovate at all. I presume they're trying not to rock the boat. The game has got old and stale and only new markets (eg. RU, middle africa, middle east) are keeping the numbers up. All the US and EU I know have stopped playing over the last 2 years. Admittedly most have been playing from beta, but the lack of any innovation and interesting stuff to do has burnt them out.
We're all waiting for games like Infinity Universe and Jumpgate Evo (ergh!). If IU gets it's act together I think it could strip out half of CCPs subs straight away but it's at least another couple of years away IMHO.
It's revenue splitting so not a chance, it's not good business sense within a region (limited by ping and laws). The biggest MMOs do licence out based on region like mythic (WH) and blizzard (WoW) but they are locked in licences.
There's 1 exception closed games like Auto Assault; they could licence them out with no support and it would work. Community donations for servers and licence fees etc.
built from nothing? it uses pre-existing IP from other film and game dev studios and is built using the champions online engine! They only needed content and engine adaptation, that's a lot more than 'nothing'.
