The Soapbox: In defense of consequence

Not entirely true. Players in DDO have proven that permadeath (albeit player enforced permadeath) characters can take on raids tuned for normal players. This shows that you can have difficult encounters with permadeath consequences.

Personally, I've never enjoyed hardmodes that much (particularly when taken in the same vein as this article). The only risk is banging your head against the wall in frustration, and the rewards barely compensate for that personal injury. :D

Actually, the cost in EVE is no greater than the cost in WoW for the most part. Most PVPers only end up with a bit of a dent in their pocketbook and a bit of travel to get back into the action. PvEers, a larger dent.

It could be worse, but that's a rather rare scenario. That's really about it.

Yeah, the feed is missing the embedded link. Can't listen in a regular podcatcher. Please fix!

Storyboard: Say yes to the dress

While I agree, I think we're talking about RP scenerios here, which is a rather different beast altogether. Roleplaying a female as a man is not simple, and should be undertaken with care.

If you're not RPing, then don't worry about it. If you are, put some effort into it.

The Daily Grind: Does viewpoint matter to you?

First person is by far superior, as the immersion factor is huge. As an example, walk around the Tauren starting area in first and third person views. Did you even realize there were hills in 3rd? In first, the rolling hills become such a beautiful part of the zone, you get a new appreciation for it.

That said, WoW put absolutely no effort into first person view, so I can't stay in it for long. No head bob, you can't see yourself (weapons, hands, etc).. can hardly tell when you're in combat or not. So, much to my regret, I will continue in 3rd person in WoW.

Yes. Because god forbid they work on fixing bugs, game changing content, or lives.

Oiy.

Looks fun, sounds fun, great subscription plans... looking forward to this game.

Missing something in our MMOs 3: Beyond Thunderdome

Given the recent successes with players and reviewers of Demon's Souls, I would say that there's definitely a cadre of gamers who are seeking a challenge involving skill, not just time. Failure there is not necessarily permanent (you loose currency, which doubles for experience), but it's pretty harsh nontheless.

By all means, bring that back into our MMOs!

Should MMOs in general slow their roll?

I played Fallen Earth beta, and live for a bit... never had any fun with it. The game play wasn't anything compelling, and interacting with other people usually consisted of racing to a resource node. No pushes towards cooperation, not even in the "support" cities.

And I loved EQ and Eve... so I am not just inherently adverse to slow progression or sandbox games.

The Daily Grind: Are you a raider?

Jul 25th 2009 12:10PM (Massively)
I raid 2 nights a week, for about 3 hours at a time. We're not at the end of Ulduar, but we're solidly in the middle, and exploring the new content together. Quite a bit of fun, really.

Yes, I'm a raider, with a family and a full-time job. And a social life outside of the game as well. :D
