So it looks like the game will be there, which is awesome. Can't wait to see it.
Hey guys. Matt from Red 5 Studios here. Just wanted to clarify that the studio is not shutting down, the game hasn't been put on hold or canceled and we plan to release worldwide. I'm really excited with what we have and can't wait to show it to you, but that will be at a later date.
Have no fear. We're still around and hard at work.
Nice article. I think a lot of people can relate to what you've experienced. Whether this is good for the genre as a whole or just shows that we're never going to get back what we first experienced... who knows?
The thing I'm getting most out of these comments is how everyone is completely different. There are so many conflicting complaints that it proves how impossible it is for any game company to cater to everyone and how quickly the "fans" will turn on said game company when the product released doesn't meet the gamer's requirements even though they are completely opposite of someone else's requirements.
As excited as I am about this, they should probably hold off. If they announce something this week, it'll be gone in a couple days when Blizzcon information starts coming out.
I believe you are using persistence in an interesting way. Assuming that "persistence" is defined as permanent change rather than continuation or remaining the same. As in a persistent world... a world that does not disappear when you log off. A world that other players are sharing with each other and cooperating or competing with each other.
To say that something is not persistent because it can be repeated by someone else or gets reset after a time (as in a quest or a raid) is to define the word "persistent" to a very particular connotation.
You say you don't support Exteel because it was not persistent and focused on small team combat, yet you continuously post about Global Agenda and Huxley which are the same thing. Neither have a persistent world. They have instanced areas that are reset when you leave/re-enter. And while WoW has these same instances in the raids and dungeons, the majority of their content is an open, shared, persistent world.
Tribes is actually completely free now. Vivendi released it after Tribes: Vengeance came out. Regardless, I still am wary of calling this an MMO. It's completely instanced maps with an avatar-based lobby system. Character progression alone does not constitute an MMO. By that definition, TF2 is an MMO.
If persistence is all that is required to be considered an MMO, then nearly every multiplayer game that has come out in the past 2 years is an MMO. CoD4, TF2, Battlefield etc etc. Any game that includes achievements or unlocks could be considered an MMO under that definition.
An MMO involves an open, persistent world with a shared gameplay experience for for a large number of players (over 1000 if you want to be considered massive). That is not to say that MMOs can't have instances, but they must have an open-world environment where people live. Warhammer Online, World of Warcraft, EverQuest (1 and 2), PlanetSide, Aion, Lineage... These are MMOs. Everything else is simply naming itself an MMO to hop on the bandwagon and it's going to hurt the overall market as people get burned out of being lied to by marketing people selling something that they're not.
