Leaderboard: Ultima Online vs. EverQuest vs. Asheron's Call

@Greymantle

I quit playing after Trammel.

Wish I got into AC more but I didn't give it much of a chance, I pretty much quit MMOs after EQ was ruined and didn't bother returning until SWG, PS and EVE launched all around the same time of each other.

I'd pick them all over the shite of today.

In fact I still play EQ project 1999 server based on pre Luclin and PoP, the expansions that ruined the game.

WAR40K devs laid off, game will no longer be an MMO

Probably for the best, these things happen because the game just doesn't look up to scratch and no cancelled MMO in the past was ever looking good.

Raph Koster categorizes his best game design blog posts

I loved SWG Pre CU but Raph seemed like the only one who understood what the design of the game was all about and yet it left in late 2003 which after the game started going downhill fast. Funny he said he would never have done Holocrons and people hated them because they made you play professions you didn't want to.

All that is in the past now, SOE had their chance and they blew it like with all their MMOs. I would love to see a Raph Koster designed MMO again, probably wont see it so.........

@Pingles

lol no, it'll have like less than 10,000 and they'll have to release it for PC, the PS3 fanbase wont be interested in it and it probably wont even be a good game.

PS2 is an MMO and DUST isn't.... sorted.

Clone Wars Adventures hits 10 million player milestone

They count all SOE accounts that have logged in since it has launched. I'm counted as a player because it's subscription active on my SOE account and I've never even played it.

Traditionally FPS games don't do as well on the PS3 as other platforms, the online for the PS3 isn't set up well and the controller sucks for FPS games. They would have done much better to stick to the 360 for an FPS, though Microsoft's bullshit probably stopped that from happening. Then lets not forget that the PS3 has the smallest install base in the west out of the main consoles, especially in the US where the FPS genre is king.

MMOs also don't have a strong record on consoles, FF11 is probably the best performing but most of that success is down to Asian markets. Downloadable only games on the PS3 haven't had much success either. Lets not forget that the EVE IP might as well be a new one for the consoles as most of the people playing on them have never heard of EVE Online. Also console people want the best graphics for an FPS and from what we've seen of actual gameplay, it doesn't look the impressive. People wont understand the premise of the game and why to ignore the mediocre graphics, like like how everyone says Planetside 2 looks like shit on gametrailers, they don't understand the premise just by looking at it.

The barrier to entry for Dust is going to be so high that I doubt many people will play it on the PS3 other than EVE Online fans who happen to own one. I reckon they'll get close to launch and see there is barely any interest in it for the PS3 and delay it for a PC release. That or it'll be two months in, a big failure and they'll have no option other than to port it to PC to recoup the costs.

Dust for PS3 only will be one of the biggest mistakes CCP has ever made. It'll probably lead to massive lay offs if they do not develop for the PC. See the EVE fan base is already on PC, F2P games already prove to be massive hits on the PC and platforms like Steam will have many people playing it.
