Gods & Heroes letter brings dire tidings

Never never never buy someone elses project half way through development, expecting to hire a completely new dev team and launch it successfully.

It was being sold off for a reason.

The Daily Grind: Would you pay extra for a filtered community?

I would be willing to pay an extra $1 every month to get a proper GM enforced server for an RP community.

The issue with "repeat a skill = get more skillful" is that in an mmo enviornment that progression is extremely long in order to draw out your gameplay and subscription period.

This leads to players using macros and leaning heavy items on their keyboard for repetition of said skill on something harmless that serves no danger.

i remember once leaving my Guardian in EQ2 to auto attack vs a grey enemy that couldn't kill him just to skill up on a weapon I was useless with. I just walked away and let the computer do the work.

You could argue without autoattack I couldn't do that but thats besides the point...the fact I was so bored of doing the activity is the issue. That I could leave the keyboard because it took so long to achieve is the reason mmos feel "grindy"

Until we can move away from this need to keep players playing for long periods of time, mmos will always have repetitive, mundane and tedious tasks to perform that take forever because the result of that is more money to the game developer/publisher.

If people stopped buying or spending money on games like this perhaps there might suddenly be a need to offer gameplay over grind but then how do you propose those companies make money month after month? there is a human limit to content production that is worth doing and that limit conflicts with the speed mmo gamers eat it up.

EVE Online's The Mittani issues formal apology for crossing the line [UPDATED]

Mar 27th 2012 5:31AM (Massively)
The question for me would be, where do you draw the line on what is a bannable offense in a video game, through actions or statements outside of the video game?

CCP gave this guy a spotlight to voice his misguided opinion on what is funny and to then turn around and ban him? The fault is with CCP, for giving him a voice and then letting him use it.

What they need to do now is for CCP to take action to contact the named suicidal player and get him to change his in game name, get any chat logs of anybody who has harrassed him up to that point and ban those people.

Then obviously, remove this "spokesperson" from their council of community members and never again allow their council members to speak at CCP sponsored events. CCP just forgot players aren't employees, they aren't on their side of the fence.

All that choice and players will still all fall into the same copied builds because they just want to be told what is best.

Gamers today just think they want choice, the fear of choosing differently and not being 100% effective in one aspect of the game freaks them out to the point they give up free will and become sheep.

The species you unlock are what already exists, it just means those species that are exclusively one faction such as Chiss or exclusively one class such as Miraluka will be unlocked for other factions and classes.

So you could have a Sith Jedi or a Chiss smuggler...they still use the existing voices, they just swap the appearence and species special ability.

The Soapbox: Voice chat is the worst thing ever

Mar 20th 2012 4:11PM (Massively)
I don't use voice chat, I do fine, people I play with are often rubbish or bitch at me because THEY don't want to type but that won't make me use it. I just leave them to it and carry on playing.

People using voice chat are often too dumb to recognise that when they call for help or shout a warning to a specific player that neither their name or the name of the subhect is revealed without them using it.

People successfully raided long before voice chat was nessecary, this is because originaly raids were done by players with the skill and understanding of the game, now you can be yelled at by a stranger and install a few mods that allow you to be a drooling idiot.

Another one bites the dust: Warhammer Online shuts down another server

This is an excellent point, it is definitely possible the license originaly bought by Mythic prevents EA from turning the game free to play.

The other thing about free to play is, it's not just a switch, it takes time and money to convert a subscription game to f2p and that doesn't gurantee your income will increase enough to offset the cost of the conversion, especialy when the game is already seeing vastly dwindling numbers.

The Daily Grind: Would you play a Witcher MMO?

Mar 20th 2012 8:12AM (Massively)
No, because I feel the two best features of the Witcher rpg's are that it doesn't pull any punches with it's mature content, while always appearing actually mature rather than immature and it makes your decisions impact the future story of the game and the world you are playing in.

In an mmo both of these elements would be watered down for the persistant world and "teen" audience.

Some single player games really are great because they are a single player experience.
