Continuum is STILL going? Man that thing was the hottest thing in '01. I remember getting pwned because I was carrying three flags in Extreme Games pub and not knowing why people were abusing me. I did figure it out in the end (still no good at aiming and shooting though) and it was a blast. It seemed to die off slowly though, I know Trench Wars was slowly declining...
But that's seriously a game to play when not wanting to play a game... good fun.
After being speedlimited on my internet account for the past week I returned to PuG raiding Monday afternoon. Obs10, Obs25, 3/15 Naxx (group fell down), VoA25, and 3 or 4 heroics followed in the past 36 hours. I think I got one upgrade - Drape of Surgery - out of Naxx - and I'm a shadowpriest, so haste rating is fail. Gear is as gear does though, and it was an improvement over the quest reward from Borean Tundra I took to the raid.
After that brag - Blizzard - please get maintenance right tonight. Take the servers off for longer if you have to - but please get it right:)
I logged on. I bought Dual Talent Specialisation. I trained Divine Spirit as a baseline ability. I was happy.
I set up my primary talents as a Shadow build, taking anything and everything that bumped my DPS available at 76... but not before taking the all-important Disc talents for levelling (Imp Inner Fire, Twin Disicplines, etc) I marvelled that Devouring Plague can now be talented to have a insta-poke effect. I learnt that my DoT spells now have a chance to critically tick. I was in awe.
I listened to Fury warriors complaining on guild vent about their DPS being nerfed. I smirked. Finally, the Shadowpriest is more than just a mana battery - we can throw down some damage now. I was ecstatic.
I activated my secondary talents. I specced deep holy down to Guardian Spirit. I was initially suspicious about Holy Concentration and Surge of Light, they've always been dodgy talents in a Holy build. But I liked the look of Empowered Renew. I, as a matter of course, took the 17 points in Discipline useful to the old BC CoH build (Unbreakable Will, Inner Fire, Imp PW:F, Meditation, Inner Focus, Meditation). I was skeptical.
I opened Looking for Group. It actually asked me to specify what roles I could fill in a group. I was able to put myself down as a healer or a damage-dealer. I put both. I got a run as a healer (not too rapt in that idea) 5 minutes later, through normal Gun'Drak.
I fell in love with healing again. I never remembered Holy being that fun. Surge of Light procs, Empowered Renew giving me some frontloaded healing, Holy Concentration preventing my mana pool sucking out on the first 3 heals (I exaggerate but I'll touch on MP5 shortly). Even Prayer of Mending was a cool cast. I even managed to make good use of Greater Heal ;)
My only complaint? My MP5 while casting has been gimped in both specs. I rarely had to drink as Shadow - I cheated the 5SR as hard as I could as often as I could (I'm the sort of player that misses Wand Specialisation). I don't feel Spirit Tap procs return enough mana, but hey, this is new WoW.
I think I'll remember this as the patch where I fell in love with being a Holy priest again, because prior to this, it was either deep PvE raiding disc or shadow, Holy had no real new tricks and it's talents were all over the shop (Improved Holy Concentration? bleh). Holy priests seem to make sense again now :)
I cut my teeth as the underweight 3rd healer of a 10 man Karazhan group with just 1000 healing back in BC. I learnt how to stopcast, time a GHeal, know the most applicable spell to downrank, learn how and when to pot/Shadowfiend/Inner Focus/wand (LOL)...
Then I got lazy thanks to overgeared tanks and overgeared healers spamming Circle of Healing. Greater Heal lost it's relevance. And then Patch 3.0 came out and I was unimpressed with what they'd done to the Holy tree. Seemed all the new cool stuff out there for Priests was in Discipline. Guardian Spirit isn't very exciting at all, my goal is to keep people alive
Greater Heal is pretty much obsolete now that Druids have access to short-cast direct healing spells. I may change that once I experience raiding in Wrath (ended up stepping away from the game because Priests got crapped on in 3.0 IMO)
