As a wise man once said, "the trill of an adventure lies in the journey, not the destination."
Let's take a story from the oldest book ever, the Bible. The stories about Moses leading his people to the promised land is so much more epic then when they reached there. In the end, only 2 out of the rest decided to venture into the unknown against big giants bosses for phat lewt in the form of rivers of honey and fruits the size of a man and that kinda stuff that would make any man at that time cry with joy.
It is quite similar to the players journey through an MMO. As they start out, they are constantly tested, awed and generally given a blast. But as they progress, they start to get weary, bored or just burnt out. Some stop before they reached the end, whilst many others would stop right at the end, too intimidated by the end game content which is raiding and PvP, even with the rewards being really cool and awesome.
I do believe that both are necessary, leveling and end game. But the problem lies not in the fact that there is an end game, but in the bridging of the end of leveling and the beginning of endgame, which is poorly done, even in WoW. Because, no one likes making this long somewhat arduous journey only to find that they now have to make another!
This game was actually released in Korea about 2-3 years ago and had it's beta on Ijji for a few months under the name Genesis A.D. before being mysteriously taken down.
From "super-jumping" assault soldiers, cloaking snipers to grenade scattering engineers, there's a class you would find interesting. It's a normal FPS made interesting with the above class mechanics with a few unique weapons thrown into the mix.
However, after playing Blacklight, I feel that it might be a little too late for Repulse to come in!
@Makovorn & Cyroselle How hard is it to say "Sorry guys, it's just not legally and/or financially feasible for us to operate in your countries."
I understand how legally binding a contact can be and the repercussions of ignoring said contract, I can also understand how much the costs of operating world-wide would affect a budding publisher.
However, I don't understand why EME had to just point to pretty much every country outside it's continent and brand them cyber-criminals.
Insulting, just insulting. But, I admit I have more pressing concerns to attend to, like exploring my new-found cyber-criminal powers and how I can use them in conjunction with my superior Chinese intellect, penchant for doing repetitive tasks and awesome ninja-like moves.
"....vast majority of internet traffic we see from these regions is from cyber-criminals..."
Thanks to you EME, now not only are we Asians doings things on a far superior level compared to the rest of the world and are well-versed in martial arts, now a vast majority of us are cyber-criminals too.
Please please please give the TRUE reason which is probably LICENSE/TECHNICAL LIMITATIONS.
Because to have a true fight, you will need two clones who picked up Street Fighter at the exact same time, played the exact same training matches using Ryu before fighting each other. In a totally controlled environment with no external factors. Like sweat. Or mosquitoes.
Of course, that is totally absurd, much like the request for a fair fight. So of course, we go for the next best thing, skill ceilings. Hopefully, more people will be aware of that. So, even in many F2P games, equipment designed to give an edge does not even nearly mean total domination with the above-mentioned in the game designer's mind.
I'm surprised SWG's Entertainers are so low on the list, pre-NGE wise, they were not desired to play or to have in a group, but they were simply needed. Without listening to their music or watching them sexy sexy Twi'leks sway their hips, your battle wounds would never truly heal, even with the best doctors out there.
It made most cantinas out there lively and fun, and is the one thing that made RP, intended or not, strive in a galaxy that was.
@BigAndShiny If you look at the word "Revolutionary" as only meaning totally new and never seen before, then yes, you are right. But the word also means a really huge change, and while subjective at best when used in this context, he isn't too far from the word.
Without going into an in-depth emotive and technical analysis, simply put, it made a familiar mode feel new and a hell lot more fun!
Just so you know, there IS an option to turn on which will display your CURRENT companion's stats besides yours.
I believe it's called "Show Companion Comparison" or something vague like that.
What Pylades meant is that there is currently no way to quickly see if an item is an upgrade for his other 1-3 companions. Perhaps in the future, they could implement a sub category under the above-mentioned with "Show all companions" and/or "Only show companions if direct upgrade".
I certainly wouldn't want 6 tooltips covering my screen every time I mouse over a piece of equipment...
I personally hope that it will be a Jade Empire MMO of sorts!
I believe what they were trying to say, is that to create an MMO at such a magnitude, which range from the actual creation to support for the large amount of players, they would need a substantial amount of money.
And such money comes from investors, who are aware of F2P games, but still view it as an extremely high risk project. And you can't blame them, truth of the matter is that for every 1 F2P game that does well, at least 9 others fail terribly, while many others get a mediocre reception and fade into obscurity within 6 months of launch.
It doesn't matter if it's Bioware or Star Wars, any decent investor will know that no matter the names, a high risk project is a high risk project.
And it is harder to estimate the revenue for a F2P game. As the numbers range from abysmally low to insanely high each month. In otherwords, not only are investors gambling on the game being a success, they are gambling on each month's profits! As an investor, few things is more scary then that. Unless you count investing into that Nigerian bank.
However, for a P2P game, it is much easier to estimate the revenue. As there is much less variables, it's easier to come up with a reasonable figure to spur them investors on.
Are F2P the way to go? Only time will tell, but I suspect that AAA quality F2P games will still be a very small minority at this time.
