Common questions for new DDO Unlimited players [Updated]

Sep 14th 2009 10:45AM (Massively)
I agree with this. Most MMOs seem to be about grinding your way up to the level cap so you can get into the fun stuff. DDO feels like its designed to be more about the journey as opposed to the destination.

Common questions for new DDO Unlimited players [Updated]

There's been a lot to figure out and this certainly helps. Fortunately, this game's been around long enough for there to be a good bit of information out there on quests and such. Figuring out how to swap weapon sets did take a while, though. 8)

I'm actually enjoying the game quite a bit, which surprises me. The game is different enough from the standard WoW/WAR/AoC MMO grind to keep my interest. I've tried and tried to get back into one of these games for the last six months and I haven't made it past a week before getting really bored and having that burned out feeling come back over me. I've actually found myself having fun and enjoying myself for a change.

No, it's not the greatest thing since sliced bread but it has been fun and I think it's well worth a try.

The Daily Grind: Counting the accounts

I haven't done much more than download it, log in, and roll a toon. I don't think, at least I hope, that's not it. That video was just bad.

The Daily Grind: Is it luck?

It did benefit from the stars aligning properly at just the right time. I'd day luck does play the biggest factor in its subscriber numbers.

I can't stand WoW now but I'll not take anything away from the game because of that. They would've never sustained such numbers if they didn't put out an awesome game. It's deserving of the top spot.

It does, however, taint everyone's perceptions of every other MMO. Everything else is judged by how WoWish it is. I think that's the only downside. People get comfortable with a certain style and system and they're unwilling to leave their comfort zone and give something else a fair shake.

Better know a gold farmer

I wonder how many of these gold farmer accounts contribute to the massive subscriber numbers.

Runes of Magic nabs 700,000 players at launch

I doubt it'll dip. Most likely it'll grow steadily in a way similar to Rune Scape. It's free to play so there's no reason to unsubscribe? Even people who don't play regularly will log in once in a while when the bug hits. There's no penalty for not doing so. It's not like you're forking over $15 a month that could be better spent elsewhere.

It's also a very nice game. It's on par with most any subby game out there now. I was pleasantly surprised by it during the beta. It won't be my main MMO but I'll play it once in a while when I'm bored or burned on other games.

How to stop worrying and enjoy games like Darkfall

Mar 20th 2009 11:17AM (Massively)
Everyone playing here at work seems to enjoy it. They talk about how much they're enjoying it quite a bit.

I think I'll take their word for it rather than the word of amature forum trolls. It's funny how people who have never logged in make assumptions and then speak with authority.

Then again, the guys at work cut their teeth on games like Eve and got bored with WoW quickly, calling it dull and repetitive.

First Impressions: Runes of Magic

I've been playing it and it's not bad at all. I can't see a lot that a subscription mmo would have over this.

It'd be nice if people would actually try it before becoming flaming trolltards based on screen shots.

The Daily Grind: Leaving your last love behind

Mar 16th 2009 9:48AM (Massively)
I played WoW for 3+ years and quit without a second thought. I have enough of a life outside of a video game to not get that wrapped up in a virtual personality. It was the same way when I stopped AoC.

It's fun, and a bit sad, to see some of my friends who play MMOs refer to themselves as their character's name and tell people who don't play, and who could care less, about their virtual adventures. The friends who play EQ are the worst of the lot.

I enjoy my MMOs and play a good bit, but I just can't let myself become that absorbed in a character. It's just weird to become defined by a video game 'toon as opposed to your real life accomplishments and relationships.

To each his own, though. Maybe excelling at an MMO is someone's grandest life accomplishment.

Mythic merging forty low population WAR servers

Mar 10th 2009 2:03PM (Massively)
I remember the early days when all there was to do, it seemed, was grind scenarios. Now, though, they're more part of a bigger balance of things to do. I think it's more to do with people in oRvR than any content they've added, but it has greatly improved.

Stating that scenarios should be removed is a bit silly. They are, like anything else, great fun in proper moderation. Boring as hell, though, if that's all you do.
