The Anvil of Crom: Age of Conan year three retrospective

I have had this love hate relationship with AoC for so long. Khitai was awesome at first, but the grind caused my whole guild to quit. The PvP split between servers is just silly. I really don't get with all the low server population why they don't merge. I think every once in a while of trying it again, but not until I see them address the PvP population balance not the game balance. Only EVE seems to get how important guild mechanics is to game mechanics. They actively take a hand in guild balance issues. AoC seems to pretend like there are not just a handful of guilds and they decide the information and mood of most of their player bases.

Wasteland Diaries: Don't fear the reaper

@Morreion Don't waste your money man. FE still has cartoony combat and the servers are practically empty. Part of it is design ( lots and lots of towns ) but most of it is the fact that the whole game is filled with Kill 10 Rats and FedEx Missions and nothing else. It gets boring quick. The PvP is lacking unless your in one of said clans. And they just lost 3 of the biggest clans in the whole game:

I find it funny that the PvP community gets crippled by one whole faction mass quitting and Edward skips over it. I do wonder with all the coverage Massively gives FE- how much they get paid.

Earthrise devs on risk vs. reward with mechas in organized ganks and looting

AWESOME. Dry Looting is the only way to play online gaming. Risk vs Reward is the ultra mantra for a good game. Real loss. Real fun.

Some players feeling burnout in Darkfall already?

keep telling yourself that and maybe one day it will become true. there is still a 5 minute window to buy the game each day as the new copies get sold out that fast.

k,thx.,bye.

The Daily Grind: Does a game need PvP to be successful?

Apr 13th 2009 4:09AM (Massively)
As a Ultima Online wanderer, I can saw that most of us Vets try and grapple with this argument all the time in MMOs.

What most of us have concluded is that PvP is only useful and done right when you have a "'generic item game" IE: most of the weapons\armor are generic, so losing them on death is nothing special. Designer Dragon was a Designer for Ultima Online along with Richard Garriot, but DD was the true brains behind the whole thing and he has written whole treatises on this very subject.

It has to be Risk vs Reward. In games like LOTRO, the risk the repair bill and the time.

If you want to make a PvP game, you have to have risk and it has to be more than simply dying and getting booted back to the rez stone.

If a game is not willing to put in risk, don't try and make a PvP game. PvE games are just fine. I play DDO when I am not playing Darkfall Online. I love PvE. I also live the PvP drama of EVE and DFO.

The other key element is housing and towns. What Made UO so great was player housing and what makes DFO great is the vastness of the world and the town system , like EVE with the star system idea.

Its not the act of PvP that makes things great. Its the drama between guilds.

There is so much more, but I agree with many of the above people. Don't' try and force PvP because you feel you need it. Do it right or don't do it at all. make a nice dueling system and focus on PvE content.
