Goblinworks CEO: 'There's a whole new way to make MMOs affordably'

Dec 8th 2011 12:18PM (Massively)
What I'm assuming he means, at a glance, is that the game world will only support the 4,500 players at start -- as in, the world itself will only feasibly hold that many. Think in terms of EVE's systems and how many would be needed for that many players, then each month expand that to accommodate another 4,500.

Basically, they want to get the game out faster and more cheaply by having a smaller world initially that they then grow each month, instead of releasing one giant world after a long, costly development period and hoping they draw enough people to cover the costs.

@(Unverified) Considering CoH came out before WoW it's rather hard for it to really be a 'WoW-clone'.

You're safe on the first two sets of islands, so no worries about getting ganked. That gives you plenty of time to build up skills and resources before moving on to the more dangerous areas.

Gave it a try, only made it about 10 minutes in -- I can usually handle terrible MMOs, but this one is quite bad. It's like they attempted to clone Diablo 1 and failed miserably.

I'd actually prefer murloc drones. In addition to attacking like normal they'd release groups of smaller murloc drones that would also attack the target. All while playing the gurggling effect, of course.

Actually, being from the demographic of a young guy I can explain what I believe to be the reason for the popularity with my peers.

There was a grouping of cartoons during our younger days that were quite popular -- Dexter's Laboratory, Powerpuff Girls, Johnny Bravo, etc. -- and this cartoon (MLP) is actually fairly similar to them (talent that worked on some of those works on this, so it's not surprising) and thus provides a bit of nostalgia. The cartoon is also quite well done, in general.

As Brenden said -- there's quite a bit of talent working on the show and it was written to appeal to a much larger and diverse audience than its target demographic. If you've ever enjoyed Powerpuff Girls or Dexter's Laboratory, there's a chance you'll also enjoy MLP quite a bit.
