Maps+ adds tracking and location-based alarms to Google Maps

The Maps app uses Google's map tiles, but is made by Apple, not Google.

Palua allows you to quickly switch between standard and Apple function keys

Apr 21st 2011 12:32PM (TUAW.com)
I'd like to see one that would be program specific. If I have the Forklift app running, I need quick access to F5, F6 & F7, although the rest of the keys could stay. If I switch to another app, then I don't care about using the function keys. It'd be nice if you could have it only flip functions when certain programs are foreground.

Don't grab this if you're jailbreaking for XBMC.

Instagram for Android under development

Android already has a decent equivalent, "Retro Camera" is a pretty slick app for the same sort of photo effects.

The iBookstore six months after launch: One big failure

Oct 14th 2010 9:36AM (TUAW.com)
Just a note: Amazon deliberately excludes public domain books from their book count total, so you shouldn't remove the 30,000 from Amazon's count.

I'm really surprised that Apple didn't move the needle more in iBooks. At launch everyone thought that the ipad would be a Kindle killer, and while it did depress hardware sales, the Kindle software itself is stronger than ever. You can buy a book from Amazon and read it on any device, or buy it on iBooks and read it on your iPad or iPhone. Granted it's an epub from iBooks, but it's not a DRM free epub that you can load up on a Nook or anything.

Amazon has shown they really get the software sales side of the business. I wish they had a more open file format for their books, but if I'm going to buy a book I buy it from Amazon.

Also check out Calibre if you're looking to convert ebook formats. You can covert epub to mobi to load on a Kindle, or any document format to any ebook format.

'The Amazing Race' Season 17 Teams Announced

Any news on HD? This show is in dire need of it. If freaking ipods can shoot HD video, there is no excuse not to have it HD in 2010!

Flipboard - the personal iPad magazine the web just fell in love with

Jul 21st 2010 2:59PM (Download Squad)
Bit overrated. The animations are fantastic, the flips are great, but you can only read content from their pre-curated lists, you can't import any RSS site.

No integration with Google Reader, which is a problem.

Finally you can't read the whole articles anyway, it only shows an excerpt. You can click to make it larger, but the article caps at a certain word count and it has a button to read the full article on the web. That's where you lose the elegance. Nice animations, flips and zooms, but as soon as you want to read paragraph 3 you have to click out to read the full article on the web page.

If you could merge this with the Reeder app I think you'd have something.

Facebook and Flickr team up for photo sharing, and it totally makes sense

Jun 14th 2010 7:25AM (Download Squad)
It's not very good. What it does is put a wall post for EVERY photo you upload. I was midway through uploading 260 photos from a day at the beach, when all the complaints from my Facebook friends started rolling in. The built-in flickr integration in the profile settings does a better job, as it'll post a single update in that instance, instead of 260.

Ask Engadget HD: Best video encoding process to maximize quality & compatibility?

Dec 2nd 2009 7:06PM (Engadget HD)
My fave is using DVDShrink to rip the movies to an ISO image. I use the reauthor mode, ditch all the menus and extra language tracks, so I'm left with a 3-4 GB ISO file that I play with XBMC running on an AppleTV. Works great for movies.

For TV with interlacing, I usually rip with the high profile preset in Handbrake, and turn on "Slow" deinterlacing. Make a nice .mp4 or .mkv container out of it and it's gorgeous.
