For a long time these were the preferred team levelling missions in CoX. Taking a newspaper/police scanner missions guaranteed that the mission would be simple and nearby - perfect for a PUG that just wants to steamroll stuff without story or complex mechanics getting in the way.
@DancingCow What diminishing returns thing are you referring to? I can't think of anything like that in the incarnate system offhand, except maybe only getting the Empyrean merit reward once per day.
I didn't think I would like trials, and left CoH alone for about a month or so when they were first introduced, but to my surprise when I tried them they brought me back to CoH in a big way and got me playing a lot more often. It's been a few months, I've got three characters to T4 and are working on my fourth and fifth, and regularly participate in and run PUG trials and MO attempts. It's still a lot of fun for me no matter what trial I'm doing, and progression is constant. I simply cannot wait for more incarnate powers to be made available and more trials to open up.
That said, the incarnate system is entirely optional. If you don;t want to do it, don't do it, just make alts like you always did. Levels 1-45 are still there.
If I remember correctly, there is a sign INGAME on Monster Island (near where you can fight the robot dino) that actually says the Qularr brought Qwijybo... even though you saw a manimal mutate into Qwijybo during the monster island crisis.
If there was one thing that I was disappointed with in CO, it was the slipshod and shoddy writing. It was a setting that was completely impossible to take even slightly seriously.
They had a mix-and-match power system years ago wayyy back in CoH beta but abandoned it in favour of the archetype system because it was too easy to make characters that were completely fotm invincible or completely gimped.
By the look of CO, Cryptic's still not completely cracked it. Regardless, mix and match powers are not something Paragon's very likely to do - at this point it really wouldn't benefit anyone to change the very foundation the entire game balance is built upon.
Lemmo is definitely right. I clearly remember the nerd rage on the forums when they changed a bunch of the hairstyles to new, more detailed versions. People liked their old low-fi hair because they were used to it.
You should check out some of the videos and screenshots of ultra mode. I don't think they're drastically altering the models or textures - what they are doing is adding real time shadows, ambient occlusion and reflections on water and glass in all areas.
