Star Wars: The Old Republic opens up pre-loading for early players [Updated]

Dec 8th 2011 2:46PM (Massively)
@Eamil but BW has stated many many many times that Origin is not needed to play so I fail to see how Origin banning a person for being a moron in Battlefeild3 or another EA game that REQUIRES Origin effecting SW:TOR and if you were somehow banned from the SW:tor forums there are thousands of forums to go and get SW:TOR info, it isn't like a ban would break the game

Star Wars: The Old Republic beta test attracts 2 million players

Dec 6th 2011 7:48PM (Massively)
I played the last 2 beta weekends for a good 12 hours each day and I lost track of levels, or time and was totally immersed in having fun.

I normally listed to podcasts or streaming something on my 2nd monitor when I would play LotRO because crafting sessions and waiting around in hubs never lent for a need to leave the music or sounds on.

In sw:tor, the music was more dynamic and would ramp up and down depending on the situation and I didn't ever want to have something going on in the 2nd monitor.

It is going to be really easy for casual and hard-core players to find good entertainment in this game for a good long time and for me Lotro lost it's way and WoW is too dated so the timing of SW:TOR will benefit a lot of people.

The beta was very smooth and it looks like bioware should be ready for a massive launch and I'l have a new mmo for at least a few years again.

The Soapbox: The absurdity of the NDA

Nov 29th 2011 3:47PM (Massively)
companies do NDA so the stock price doesn't take a hit when the haters say the game is gonna fail or isn't well made.

Look at how a bit of bad PR killed the stock price of Netflix.

Also it keeps lawyers and PR employed.

Massively Speaking Episode 163

From all the details I've read the Origin Eula is practically the same as the one for Steam and it is the wording of the way they plan on collecting data ,just like Steam does, for use in the same manner of Steam's hardware survey.

The multiple Free2play companies eula's and added software installs (punkbuster, pando, gameguard, etc..) are more of a issue because unlike Steam and Origin you have these programs installed for the game to function and their functions can affect the way you computer functions outside of the game.

The Daily Grind: Which MMO has the hardest learning curve?

Aug 9th 2011 10:49AM (Massively)
I never played EVE but I did play Final Fantasy 11 for a few years and it not only had a steep learning curve it pretty much required you learn some japanese or get used to not finding groups to level with. I still find most other MMOs almost too easy in comparison since in FFXI you could de-level if you died and crafting could fail taking with it very hard to farm compnents.

I'd open one of the extra Legendary item slots and get some deed acceleration scrolls.

The Daily Grind: What are your MMO desktop necessities?

Mar 9th 2011 12:35PM (Massively)
you have to have a stable low latency broadband connection, up to date drivers, a good headset, a good guild and I like having a 2nd monitor to lookup info or have pandora running

Digital Reflex Camera concept puts the viewfinder on top, everything else in a tube

Aug 15th 2010 5:03PM (Engadget)
too bad this "concept" is totally unpractical and unoriginal. Humans see from their eyes at head height not from belly height and to see through the eyepiece you would need a eyecup and have to hold that thing up to your face anyway.

Not only is that not a ergonomic way to hold a device, but the form is not
new or innovative. It is basically a spotting scope layout and longer lenses would be setup like a telescope.

Panasonic introduces KX-PW821 fax machine with a touchscreen and stylus, world may never be the same

Jul 9th 2010 5:56PM (Engadget)
I'd just like to point out the just because a technology is old doesn't automatically make its' usefulness or it's ability to fulfill it's intended purposed somehow not possible.

the internal combustion engine and automobiles, the camera (not the means of capturing the image, the device itself) electric generators and electricity , radio, under sea cables, airplanes are all by this point in time fairly old technology but if we didn't have them many of the things modern people do everyday couldn't happen.

A fax isn't interesting but as others pointed out asian scripts are not as easily typed as they are written as compared to latin based ones and there are a lot more people who use them than the entire population of the US is you consider just the chinese and japanese markets instead of thinking that this is a product for the manly english speaking US.

Also consider the fact that this isn't a fax for the big offices that can and do use "smart" copiers and scanners to email stuff around, it is a home/ small business type item.

I know for a fact that enough japanese households have a fax that it shows up in many anime shows too, so it makes sense to me that a japanese company would make a product aimed at the japanese market that leverages that market's ongoing use of this technology, and update it with a touchscreen so as to offer a reason for people to buy it.
