Seriously people need to calm down. EVE is dieing eve is being run into the ground blah blah its all you ever hear from forums these days, people in game are busy massacring each other as usual, with no end in sight.
You know iv played eve since 03/04, way back before sovereignty was even implemented. The game has evolved much over the past 6+ years, stuff has been added / changed, nerf but the core foundation and guiding vision and ideals behind the game remain the same since day one. As long as CCP doesn't alter or destroy the core foundation sandbox free space esq universe than this game will not die.
Iv been a pvper / ganker/ pirate / fleet battler my whole eve-career Iv done everything from high sec war deck to 0.0 to low sec pirating.. from noob frigate duel to capital fleet fight in contested space Iv done it ALL.. Its always the same group of people (everyone) bitching about xyz... 140 devs working is a **** load of devs for a mmorpg that is what ? 7 years or more old??? Look at other games in this age range, tell me how many devs they have... heck, I would be surprised if former big names like SOE or Mythic even have 140 devs or even employees in their entire company across all projects/departments... let alone ONE game.
I currently reside in gallente lowesec and you know what? They add some role playing in station stuff that I may not care about to use but it will still benefit me. If it reels in more care-bears that come through the gate in phat haulers and get popped, its only a good thing for me and my corp. Even better is when said care bears try out pvp and eventually become halfway decent, adding another person to Eves bloody and never ending power struggle.
Half of the people I know and associate with in eve, some even in different corps, were care bears at first and then turned to the dark side later on, and became quite efficient to boot.. Heck i was a carebear at first till i realised it was more rewarding to steal other peoples ore in jet cans for isk than spend time to harvest my own. This was even before flagging so I didnt even get to pewpew!
I personally like the direction that CCP takes and if its going to grow the player base even more what is there to complain about. More meat for the grinder!
And if you get bored of eve, the direction, whatever... quit. Take breaks. we all do, very few people have played straight from launch, but for me , eve always brings me back because.... theres nothing like it. What are you gonna play besides eve thats sandbox? Hmm, dark fall maybe, or mortal online if you like paying to beta-test, both games are fantasy though so for sci-fi sandbox I think your stuck with eve for a while.
Go ahead and tell me all about TERA, black rise and next-generation sandbox game X Y Z.... and how its gonna completely change the market and kill eve The amount of MMORPGS that are developed/announced vs the amount that actually cross the launch line and survive more than 6 months while being well received is highly disproportionate. Sandboxes? We have like three that are live, that are considered "mainstream" though CCP adventurine and star vault are all INDIE, even though CCP does AAA revenue and further developments...
This news is actually good news to hear... while it sucks for time traveling and the other devs (who were awesome) I believe they deserve better than anything SOE can provide them.
You know Everquest original back in 1999 was my first foray into mmorpgs. Its hard to believe its been 10 years since I stepped into the world of online fantasy at the young age of 13.
I remember once how SOE was the "leader" in online games development... and they set the standard for the entire industry to follow.
However, somewhere along the way SOE got arrogant/lazy, Smedley and his dogs started ignoring their fans/customers... the star wars galaxies debacle (NGE) of 06 is a prime example..
When you look at SOE now its a shadow of its former self, and really quite sad, considering it was once the top tier of online game companies, but, justly so, as all the crap they pulled over the years has really earned them a black mark on their reputation. In all honestly I believe Eq2 is SOEs only redeeming quality, and with word of losing of timetraveling especially one can only guess what the future is for EQ2.
Sucks, but thats what happens when you make a continual habit of ****ing on your loyal customers.
At the very least I was HOPING for a planetside esque game in warhammer 40,000 skin. WOW... talk about wasted potential
A wow esq type casual game with a targeted demographic of teens? If this is truly their goal, to make a wow clone in warhammer 40k skin, i wont buy it, and I hope it fails, just because THQ are being ignorant.
Warhammer 40,000 is suppose to be a dark, very brutal future where religious zealot humans, fight for survival against alien races, and against heretics.
Its a world about genocide and extermination... the freaken IP tagline is in the far future of the 40th mellienum there is only war.
If this IP is butchered into another kill 8 mutant rats typical quest grinder than I hope it fails and burns to the ground taking THQ with it.
Hello, I am an attorney for your family.. Mr smith can I talk to you?
"Sure"
Mr Smith as you know your grandfather passed away a few months ago , but , he wanted me to give you this. He left it in the will for you, he said it was really important for him during his twenties but admitted it wouldn't be much use now, but he still wanted you to have it.
"What is it"
Well its the ip rights and source code for a game called Chronicles of Spellborne, I guess it was for windows on the pc and was really popular in some parts of the world back then.
"What, a game that was popular back in 2000s? You mean before they invented virtual reality? What good is a game gonna do for a technology long obsolete? Thanks I guess itll serve as a good token memory on my desk I suppose.
The above imagined event pretty much sums up my feelings on companies that have good games but never capitalize on them and they just fall into disrepair and die... where the code, art and assets sit in a drawer somewhere, someplace until the end of time apparently. If they cant find a buyer or something, who knows release it under open source a whole new modding community could prop up making a new line of games.... you never know.
I'm sure some skilled persons somewhere, someplace would pick it up and make it work.
Is this game any good? I hear this game is an amazing game that is completely ruined by its cash shop, of course, how much that is forum QQ vs reality... I dont know... Maybe one of you can clue me in? Do any of you play it? How much money would you spend a month on the CS to be competitive, in comparison to a sub game?
If i can play this game for 15-20 a month and not feel held back, I might try it. If they want 100+ a month to play a game, no way in hell.
You are right and wrong at the same time. As far as a massive market share sandbox game with wow sub numbers, yeah, its not going to happen. Unless you make a game that has the broadest possible appeal then it is going to be niche. However, there is nothing wrong with a niche market base.
There is lots of room for these types of games, eve online and darkfall have proved that they can and are financially viable. A game that is niche doesn't equal fail. A game that is poorly managed and designed badly is what equals fail.
Game Studios with big publisher backed dollars are going to go for the masses, leaving the sandbox scene wide open for indies. Indie studios without publisher funding are afforded fewer mistakes and have to walk a tight line compared to aaa type games. I think thats why they are so few sandbox games. Making a mmorpg cost money, a lot of money, and indie developers usually have strict budgets, and hence lack money.
Heck, CCP, creators of now the number 1 sandbox game in terms of subscribers aka eve online, was almost canceled during development. Why? Ran out of money!! Alot of the devs jumped ship, as the company couldn't pay its employees wages. However, some of the devs decided to work on the game without pay, in the hopes it could launch and sell. Working without pay in a tough economy (iceland, even more fooked than US) in the hopes that the game will be successful, is ballsy, to say the least. Thankfully for those that stayed true to the company, it really paid off long term.
As far as UO type gameplay, there is untapped potential here. Darkfall has carved a successful piece of pie but it isn't an exact replica of UO. 10+ years have gone by since trammel, and there are still UO emulation communities with THOUSANDS of players actively playing on player run 'freeshards' that are perfect replicas of the game as it was back in the late 90s. 1000s of players ACTIVELY playing on technically ILLEGAL free shards that could be potential subscribers to "a real " game. Even Mythic/EA, the current owners of UO IP and game rights, refuse to make a classic UO server, as it was back in the day. Why? Who knows.
I am certain that If you build a functional game, have good open honest communication with players, are able to make compromises but never abandon your games vision or what made it special, then the players will come. Eve online is proof, the question is if upcoming companies are up to the task.
I havnt played warhammer in about 4 months... but what you can describe I can relate to. I played a squig herder and a chosen well into T2 and the beginning of T3.
I never actully played a SW. but I too believe SH is much better. Stance dancing sounds like the nightmare that was warrior in early WOW... also, the pet for the sh is amazing, a separate and very much disposable entity that does a fair share of dps regardless of what the SH does. Not to mention that 2 out of the 3 pets are ranged attack pets, which means they can contribute to a battle well out of range of the meele AOE that is always being spammed, and as such have much improved survivability despite lower armor and hp values.
Get your facts straight before you start spouting nonsense.
Have you even played the game since its shoddy release? While the current game does have some problems mostly in relation to pvp and bori, its a different game than it was at launch. Also the games launch state was due to Gaute Godager the original producer and lead designer, also co founder of funcom, who actually resigned due to the fail launch.. Morrison did great things for Anarchy online as lead designer and you can see why they transferred him to fix Conan..
Funcom is one of the most open and down to earth companies i know in regards to player interaction, only other companies I can think of is CCP, which surprisingly enough both of them are European companies... norweigh and iceland respectively.
