And one other thing: about the Depth of Field question (why aren't the flags in perfect focus). First, they shouldn't be in focus, they would distract from the subject of the photograph. And second, the flags are much further from Mr. Obama then people seem to realize. Although they look like they're practically hitting him in the back, they are probably ten feet away. They look close because a telephoto lens flattens the depth of the shot.
Well, in this case, the camera's EXIF data has most certainly lied, because there is no way he took this picture at f/10 1/125 at ISO 100 without flash. But, more importantly, the catchlights in Mr. Obama's eyes are caused by large soft boxes (which house flash units (monoblocks)).
