China's The9 faces bankruptcy if Wrath expansion not approved by government

Mar 13th 2009 5:21PM (Massively)
Let the regulators feel the Wrath of the Jilted WoW fanbase! This is an interesting illustration of how important cultural norms (or at least norms as represented by an authoritarian government) can be.

I doubt this will imact Chinese gold farmers. I suspect gold farmers of all origins use the localized versions of the game for the markets they wish to sell to.

The Digital Continuum: Is free-for-all PvP really for nobody?

It's good these games exist. They serve as a place for those kinds of people to inhabit while those of us who enjoy moderation and structure can avoid the sociopaths by not playing those games.

The Daily Grind: What beta are you dying to get into?

Feb 13th 2009 10:24AM (Massively)
Over all the others I'm interested in testing and contributing to Jumpgate Evolution. I want to see how NetDevil has grown and learned since Auto Assault. And I really like the concept of JGE.

I almost said The Old Republic. But it being Bioware's first MMO, I think I'll wait for launch to play because I don't want to see that product unpolished. I know my entire WoW guild plans to get it at release. So I'll be there.

NCsoft Europe cuts 70 jobs at Brighton office

Does anybody know which office they've been localizing Aion for the west? And the silence on GW2 is troubling.

WRUP: Who isn't playing EVE edition

Feb 7th 2009 2:42PM (Massively)
I'll be playing Warhammer, a new Swordmaster alt (my Zealot is really frustrating me atm) and reexamining Guild Wars Nightfall.

Top 10 ways Fallen Earth is different from all other MMOs

Feb 6th 2009 11:09PM (Massively)
I've been following this game, hoping it succeeds. But the visuals in the video they released look even worse than Darkfall's. And the dev team introductions on their forums give the impression that this is a very inexperienced team.

It'd be supper if they could release a good, successful product. Just don't pin your hopes on this one. A more watchful attitude is warranted.

Rumors abound of a massive layoff at Mythic Entertainment

Feb 4th 2009 1:34PM (Massively)
This is really sad news. What a bad time to loose a job. Jacobs has a plausable explanation up on the Herald. But there seems to be so much more QA could do for this game; long-term bugs abound.

Recent bad news for many MMO's call into question whether publically traded companies have any business publishing this kind of product. Stock holders and board members and the MBA's in the corner offices demand results in the short-term and lack patience. Those expectations conflict with the reality of the genre.

Another problem is over-hype. All but a handful of WAR's servers are dead, which is driving current subscribers away. Mythic sold many, many boxes. But now that's hurting the game because the population is too spread out.

Time will tell what kind of marketing campain Aion will get. I hope NC Soft is learning from others' mistakes.

The Daily Grind: The tides of WAR are changing - but how?

Jan 28th 2009 9:56AM (Massively)
I agree with Infamous Brad and sympathize with Holgar. I'm enjoying the game more than any MMO I've played before. But I'm about twice as frustrated with WAR as I've ever been with a game. Most of my frustration stems from how poorly they've implemented the Zealot.

I'll probably take a break from it when JGE or Aion launch if WAR continues to be so broken. Maybe it'll be less frustrating a year from now.

The Daily Grind: When your group moves on

Jan 24th 2009 2:51PM (Massively)
My tiny band of core guildmates has gone from CoH to WoW to (3 of us at least) WAR. There's a larger cloud of guildmates stuck on WoW that I enjoy. But the inner core of our group tends to be stable. Currently WoW is home base. I'm usually the one to try new games. I've just about given up on WoW but have a token priest there still. I'm actively trying to find a new game to get the entire core membership to try. They don't like WAR, which is troubled anyway. New home base will likely be Star Wars The Old Republic, or somewhat less likely Star Trek Online depending on which comes out first and which catches their fancy.

WRUP: What's a WRUP? edition

Jan 23rd 2009 11:33PM (Massively)
I'll be playing my lvl 32 Zealot on Warhammer, and maybe my lvl 15 Squig Herder when I get too angry at Mythic from playing the Zealot.

I may try to get Jumpgate Classic to work on my Vista 64 machine for the third time.

I'll be pining for Aion and Jumpgate Evolution, wondering why there are so few if any updates on their sites (and wondering why JGE's site seems to be running like it's hosted in Burkina Faso.)

If all else fails I'll PvE grind my lvl 36 holy priest in WoW when I feel like taking a nap.

And I'll work on feeling less snarky. :)
