Linden Lab and Rivers Run Red launch Immersive Workspaces 2.0

Oct 20th 2008 8:22PM (Massively)
Now we only need an open source solution. But this will come sooner or later, just like the web. I also see much potential in things like OpenSim which can be tailored better to a business use. The future of such applications will probably be not LSL scripted objects but applications running directly on the server, like web applications today.

As for the Second Life Grid it's still confusing because when talking to Robin someday it sounded as if the Second Life Grid is not the underlying technology but simply all landmass on the main grid together whereas Second Life is just the mainland (Linden Lab managed) community.

Now that makes sense and is easy to understand, right? ;-)

But then again it might also be the underlying technology and there is no actual term for the whole world (which everybody thinks is called Second Life).

So their branding seems to be a mess but glad I don't care anymore about LL's doings, it's mainly funny ;-)

Sun entering virtual worlds market, maybe aiming at educators?

Feb 25th 2008 6:36PM (Massively)
I got a demo in November at the Web 2.0 Expo in Berlin about Project Wonderland. It has some nice features like being able to share your application on your computer (e.g. Word) with others in the virtual space (sort of like an application texture if you want) or have video conferenceing in there (and you can control the camera from within the world). And yes, it's all Java.

But I think it's not really a grid but one server hosting a set of rooms. Thus it has it's limitations but because of that also some advantages like you don't have to worry too much about content theft.

Add to that that you can only create content outside the system it's not really encouraging creativity like SL does. It also does not seem to open to me in terms of interoperability as it's only that server.

What would IMHO be more useful would be if they would work with Linden Lab on their grid interoperability project. You already have a growing community around OpenSim etc. and this is because SL is a community driven project in itself. With having single servers like in Wonderland you will not really have a community though.

Thus it might be nice for isolated applications like an intranet application but then again the interoperability project from Linden Lab also has that as one of their goals (and you can actually run your own opensim already if you want to).

I am not really convinced by Wonderland although they seem to push it these days (also with NMC).

eBay Island Found!

Well, EBay did something already in SL (at least some employees) as you can see here:

Town hall a disaster

May 3rd 2007 5:30PM (Second Life Insider)
What I wonder more is why people do not use the office hours more. From what I heard of the townhall via our "group repeater" Gwyneth (because nobody else got the messages) nothing really new was said. Nothing at least which hasn't been mentioned in some office hour (especially with Zero and Kelly).

So I'd suggest that people go there, too :)

But agreed, Townhalls could be done better especially in terms of repeaters and the like. If only one person would be able to run some script which relays the text that would help a lot.
(maybe additionally to the group IMs so that at least one way of relaying is hopefully working).

Fitting the Pieces Together

Apr 27th 2007 9:25PM (Second Life Insider)
So Robin just told me that it's unlikely to be released today as they don't like updates on fridays.

She wasn't sure if it will be in the monday release (if there is one) but of course we all do hope it is (she wanted to ask Joe but he was on the phone.. why do they still have phones?)

Weekend would be great though to play with it.

Fitting the Pieces Together

Well, today or on monday he said ;-)

I also wrote another blog post after reading the wiki and what it might mean. Actually it might mean that these things are not that easy to create.

And I think the ones in the picture might be possible with rev1 already. I think that these are just 1 prim.

We will find out soon I guess.

Technical Town Hall marred by technical problems

Hm, I don't think scripts were on. I think I can remember ot have seen the noscript icon while I was there. At least in my sim corner.

The Economist covers SL

Oct 1st 2006 5:28PM (Second Life Insider)
Oh, they wrote about it before. I once noted it in this blog entry:

http://taotakashi.wordpress.com/2006/04/23/just-one-day-in-my-second-life/#more-17

It was in a special about all sorts of new media stuff like blogs, podcasts and so on and how it affects old media organisations and how they try to deal with it. SL had some box where it was explained what it was.

And as I am just back from vacation and 3 issues of The Economist are waiting for me I will pick that one now to read how they followup on that :)

Super Linden Blog

Aug 1st 2006 10:08AM (Second Life Insider)
Hey, and when you use http://worldofsl.com then you don't even need to check all the other SL related blogs for updates as it aggregates all of them into one big list ;-)

(ok, there might be missing some but I hope you tell me!)

BTW, the forum announcements seem not to be incorporated in that Linden Blog. That would be cool of course. And the problem with that RSS feed is that it needs authentication and thus I also cannot syndicate this on worldofsl.com

But maybe this can be changed at some point.

Besides I think more people will be added to that Super Linden Blog over time.
